pass around scanner test : 1 neg, many scanners

The Canon A1 is most likely a perfectly adequate camera, I don't know how good is the 50mm 1.9 lens, but I don't think there is going to be a significant difference with the Nikon 50mm 1.8.

Focus accuracy should not be an issue if you shoot at f8 on a subject not closer than 3 meters or so, the DOF should cover any accuracy easily.

So the only issue really is how good is the lens, how much would cost hiring a Bessa R with the 50mm F2.5 Color-Skopar? That should easily give the required quality.

I know it, but they don't have any of that sort of thing. They have a Canon SLR and Nikon SLR lineup, and then an Xpan.

That's it.

I might buy an Oly Epic, but that might not be proper for the test because the focus will shift.

I think your best bet is to use the MF canon you have and shoot at f8, hiring other nikon/canon slr equipment is not going to give you a significant improvement in quality.

Good. I'll take your word for it. I honestly have only shot MF 35mm SLR twice in my life. Both times were in IR, so this will be a first, actually.

That done, we have to look only at $62 split at least 4 ways so far. 5 ways or 6 ways would be awesome.

I just need one more person to make it 5 ways. . . assuming that my original 4 are in for sending me $15 each. That comes out to $12 each if we get 5.

I want to shoot this test ASAP since I need to sell my KM Multi Pro very very soon. It needs to be sold within 2.5 weeks to make bills. I need to get the test shot and scanned on my scanner within this week, tops. The rest of you can take your time.

I'm paying the tax on all this as my part + my effort in scanning, shooting, etc.

Please read the last few posts for an update

total is $63 or so. I'll pay tax and shipping.

We need one more person to make 5. $12.50 each will be adequate. Do things via paypal to

themirana@hotmail.com

The frames will be mailed on May 9th in envelopes, cut into individual frames (120) and left as mini-strips of 3 for the 35mm. I will not be mounting slides in either format.

thanks

I'm going out today to buy the 3 rolls of 35mm, and will have everyone's negs in the mail by Tuesday, so please check your mailboxes ( I sent PMs), and check in here as well.

Read the last few posts for my paypal address and other information.

If you still need another person, I would be glad to help.

Andrew is on board. You must read, anyone interested, through the thread to see if your scanner is already in the mix. Check in with me BEFORE paying anything, since the lineup is very amoebic right now. We only have three for sure members and I'm waiting to hear from 4 others.

Sorry I lost track of this thread for a little bit. I'm still in if it'll be less than $10, IF people care what an Epson 2480 can do. I am guessing that there is very little interest in a scanner that low-end (it's a flatbed, it cost about $80) and if that's the case I'd prefer to bow out if that's all right with you.

This test has begun.

I shot 6 rolls of a scene today, a little corner near Glazer's camera in Seattle. Nice tonal range. NOT a beautiful scene, but it will test your scanners well.

Shot the whole thing at f/8, tripod with a Bronica RF645/100mm and a Canon AE-1/50mm.

Used Fuji films :

Velvia 100 (shot at 100, exposure at 1/30)
Fuji 160S (shot at 160, exposure at 1/60)
Neopan 100 (shot at 100, exposure at 1/30)

will develop these films on Monday, pickup on Tuesday and mail out on Tuesday afternoon to all the addresses I get from the paypal payments.

I have three payments by paypal received, and one paper mail payment pending.

Two more and we've got it made.

ANyone in the world, hop on board if you've got an exotic scanner or one that is not mentioned in this thread. I only need two more to pay my costs, though.

I'll put any excess back into RFF.

I have received payment from three members. There are 2 who have sent me confirmation that they intend to pay. Please, if you intend to take part in this scanner test, send your $12.50. I only need two more members.

I am dropping the rolls off to be developed on Monday, will mail them on Tuesday, and will post my results to begin the review on Tuesday as well.

If you have not sent me confirmation that you intend to take part, send me a PM BEFORE paying anything out, because I only need 2 more to cut my costs.

OK, the test negs are going out tomorrow afternoon VIA the cheapest possible mail. Just in envelopes (protective carboard envelopes), the negs will be sleeved in plastic, of course. And, I will post my scans tomorrow night for you all to see in preparation for the final gathering.

I'm using the Konica Minolta Dimage Scan Multi Pro (marvel of a scanner), and the Epson 3170, and the Dual Scan Elite or IV or something like that.

thanks to the members who sent the $12.50 and your addresses. I WILL be mailing the envelopes to the PAYPAL addresses unless you sent me something different via PM.

stay tuned

Just noticed this thread. Sent email about possibility of joining the test, I might be too late though :(

not too late! I'm mailing out the negs tomorrow. I'll have extras that I can send out to latecomers. You'll get the same 6 frames that everyone else will get.

Glad to include you. Glad to have an Imacon along for the ride!

I just now sent out the kits to the following members :

xray
dnk512
fgianni
Andrew Touchon
aad
Robert Budding
Terence Tay

The kits include :

6 "Strips"

1 strip velvia 100 35mm
1 strip Fuji 160S 35mm
1 strip Neopan 100 Acros 35mm

1 strip velvia 100 120
1 strip Fuji 160S 120
1 strip Neopan 100 Acros 120

the strips are in 2, 3, or 4 frames to make loading easier. The Velvia was shot at 160 to enhance the shadows (we want to look at how these scanners handle shadows)

I didn't shoot frames with highlight blowouts, but the tonal range should be enough to get things done well. YOu will have absolute black on all the media.
