A couple of years ago I travelled to Hong Kong with a mate. This month the opportunity came up to go again - this time with my spouse. Last time I took my Leica M8 and a Canon G11. But I found that both were too slow to focus to be of much use for street work (or at least I was too slow with the M8). So this time I took only a DSLR - a Nikon D700 in the interests of keeping it more or less simple. My eyes are not much good these days and it looks as if my M8 has to be treated as a camera for landscape and similar purposes.

But, long story short, I did get some shots that I am happy with - although as you know travelliing with a non photographer, especially a spouse is not a good recipe for serious photography as there is seldom a chance to "lurk" and wait for that special shot to present itself.

These colour shots are from Kowloon Park which tends to get very busy with Philippino housemaids on their day off and women from the nearby mosque all hanging out, chatting and eating. While this limits other photo subject opportunities (the ratio of women to men was probably 40:1 for example) at least they make for some good and slightly exotic photo opps.

More photos to come soon as I process them, in particular some street shots (if they turn out).

I have to say that 14 bit RAW files on the D700s large sensor handles high contrast quite well although even it struggled with some situations (e.g. blown highlights from a fountain in sunny conditions). I tried working in jpeg and found that they were markedly less robust in anything less than absolutely perfect shooting conditions.
