Thinking about this some more, I doubt the photo software company would be seeing an RFF as a sales channel or particularly for PR. If I were them I'd be looking at it as a way of engaging with an informed, active community of users of such software and to be able to gain both feedback on their own products and insight into future designs/products based on the content of discussions - so more an R&D opportunity for them than sales and marketing.
They'll be pretty quick to assess whether the content they receive is worthwhile, so it may be worth Stephen articulating something about the exit plans being put in place - on both sides. RFF users could be left high and dry if they pull the plug, but equally Stephen should have the ability to terminate at his discretion.
