I'm generally only interested in contextual people photos, and for that 50mm or a little wider is my preference. Indeed all my lenses were around 50mm.
One day, however, I stumbled across a portrait so marvellous that I was moved to get a 135mm f/2.5 lens. I haven't used it much but I'm glad I got it. Unfortunately though I have a copy of this photo on my harddisk I can't find the source despite many hours of searching so I can't link to it and wouldn't presume to upload it.
I would be most interested to hear of similar stories particularly of other focal lengths.

While I prefer wider angle lenses, the work of a host of great photogs keeps me returning to the standard lens. Its amazing how many used the 50 as their mostly sole lens.
