Photographer tracks down strangers he shot 40 years ago.

The same sort of idea was explored about 30 years ago, in Dustbowl Descent, a book by Bill Ganzel, published by the University of Nebraska Press.

Ganzel tried to locate the individuals who were photographed by FSA photographers in the 1930s, and photograph them again circa 1980. He was pretty successful, and it's a book worth owning, if you're partial to the FSA photographs (as I am).
