Photokina 2016…..

Fuji strikes. Looks like a GX645 tinted with Contax 645 - a winner. (So they really had annexed those fabled ex-Kyocera designers!)

The price must be prohibitive though...

Oh, wait, Fuji is announcing they're developing a medium format camera, so, no camera, just a mock-up. It doesn't look as nice as the Hasselblad X1D to my eyes.

And yes, the A99 mark II - didn't saw that one coming, was looking at Canon cameras to replace my A900, but with this, well, yeah, this could very well be my next camera.

Photokina MIA

Photokina MIA

Unless I am missing something exciting,
Photokina 2016 is mostly a no show except for the very exciting Fuji medium format mirrorless.

NO FF Nikon or Canon mirrorless.
No Nikon D810 update.
Both Canon and Nikon seem to be digging themselves a deeper hole.

No Leica camera updates.

No Sony mirrorless updates.

I thought sure at the very least a new Leica camera and D810 replacement.

I did like the new Voigtlander lenses .. new style 58/1.4 Nikon, 65/2 Macro, 50/3.5 M, no surprise there.

What products are your favorites from Photokina 2016?
-- am I glad I didn't go!

so far ...

I had the opportunity to handle the Nikkor 58mm f1.4 - or rather the Nokton 58mm f1.4 in a clone mount of the original Nikkor 58mm f1.4. Exists in a all blck version and also in the chrome "nose" version. I have the previous Nokton 58mm f1.4 and it is an extremely good lens and the new Nikkor look-alike is evidently just as good. The lens that Nikon should have made in 1960 as their 58mm f1.4 (which I also have!) is not their best effort! Looking forward to compare the two versions later this fall.
The E Mount Macro 65/2 felt good too. Very fast focussing on a Sony A7II and doing some "pixel" peeping - looks really sharp. Not a small lens though - but quite light and comfortable.
I did get a production version of the VM Heliar 50mm f3.5. I know some people find it an odd lens - but I find it a/light and b/ as sharp a 50 you could wish for. Interesting lens - the front module comes from the Bessa R2S version with a M-mount helicoid adapted to it. Works very well, smooth focus and easy to hold on a M camera. The aperture ring is the same as the S mount version, hence no click stops. Not really a problem - though with non metered bodies you have to watch that you don't shift the stops inadvertently.
I suspect that some of the bigger companies, Nikon,Canon etc are balking at the cost for setting up at Fotokina. It is easier for them to announce on their websites and they are not constrained by timing. I stopped going there 6 years ago as it become more of an electronics/digital show than a true photographic gear show.

Tom, did CV ever make the Nokton 58mm f1.4 in Canon EOS mount?

Sony A99 mark II - it is exciting. I know, it isn't Nikon, it isn't Canon, it isn't even an E-mount - but boy, compared to the Canon 5D mark IV this new A-mount camera seems impressive! And for less money.

Oh, and that Fuji, well, a development announcement isn't exciting.

No Sony mirrorless updates.

Well, the A99II is essentially mirrorless... A-mount rather than E- or FE-mount, though. And while there is no new body (perhaps a earthquake casualty, Sony still seem to be short on sensors), there have been a lot of new lenses this summer - however Sony, Zeiss, Tokina, CV, Samyang and Meike had already spilled their beans before the Photokina.

It was a bit of a dud.
Very little talk of any new compacts. Maybe that segment is completely dead. Certainly it is dying.
Was hoping for an updated Fuji "X40" or similar.
Leica was smartly quiet. They seem to be like Apple in making their own events.
Why come to an industry show to release products when you can hold your own party and have the same press all to yourself? 😀
Besides don't they need some tricksy calendar numbers to have a release.
It's not 10-10 yet!!.... Oh wait... I guess it will need to be 11-11 this time 😱

No production Voigtlander 58/1.4 EOS lenses left the factory.

Leica did introduce some more SL lenses,
but the SL's popularity may not out last the on the shelf introduction of Fuji's new digital medium format camera.
24MP vs 50MP, que as mas macho?
