In the early seventies the Nikkormat FTn was the most popular 35mm SLR. I still have some shots frome those years. What a great camera it was.

This is Salomea Franken at the age of seventeen. She studied visual arts but became a performing artist in The Netherlands.

Well, in any event, those pictures could have been taken yesterday. Timeless!

(Oh, and most important, isn't that Nikkor impressive?) :)

nice photos. Proves once again that any camera in working order can take great photos when in the hands of an able photographer.

This is the Dutch author and teacher Rien Bonte in the early seventies. Unfortunately he died recently.

The 50 f2 Nikkor is a great lens. I've had all variants and apart from coatings they are all from H, HC, K, AI the same. The H shoots a little warmer on digital than later lenses but in terms of contrast and sharpness they are all equal. I've just added an AI 50 f2 again as I sold all mine. I've got it on my F3 and it really is an impressive lens and at the 30 euros I paid an absolute bargain.

I recently found a 50mm/2 AI for 40€ and thought it was a bargain ;-) It's definitely a keeper. Fantastic sharpness even at f/2.

What Nikkormat model is the one to look for?

Personally if you really want a Nikkormat then I'd go for the FT3. They are all pretty indistructable however the auto AI is handy. The only thing I've had with a couple was slow mirrors but I've had an F2 like that so it's just an age thing. A quick service and it's good to go for another 30 years.
I gave up on them after I got F and F2's as the viewfinder was too dim in comparison. They are an ideal budget film camera for someone who still wants to shoot film and not worry about dropping, forgeting or getting their camera stolen. I've bought a few for less than 50 euro. Cheapest I bought was an FT2 with a K 50 for 15! It worked superbly.

For pure esthetical reasons I'd take a black FTn. No hotshoe, all metal no plastic tipped levers and the rangefinder type body covering.

I prefer the groundglass without the rangefinder, only a small circle with microprisms.

FT2 or FT3, since they take a readily available battery, and changing film speeds is a lot easier on your fingernails.... The FT3 works with AI and non-AI lenses.

Eric,

I remember another post regarding the Nikkormat and I remember that some of the pictures that you contributed were just superb. Its nice to see that you started this thread, I can look at the pictures from your Nikkormat era over and over, some were of London I believe? They have a timelessness about them...

I've never owned a Nikkormat. I jumped straight in at Nikon F, F2, F3 level so I cannot comment. They do look very well made though and should one come along for a bargain price it might be hard to resist!

Regards

Simon

I love it too -- was she posed, or simply lost in reverie and unaware you were taking a picture? Kind of hard to quiet the shutter on these, but if on a bus or tram, maybe the ambient noise level was high enough.

Hi Simon, I've been looking for the thread you mention, but I think it has been deleted. The OP was Dave Lackey who does not accept PM's. The pictures from London you mention were from 1974.
The pictures you see here are from 1971. I was just 17 years old.

The pictures from London you can find in this Flickr-account: http://www.flickr.com/photos/erik-van-straten/?details=1

I thank everyone for their compliments.
