Bump for a long dormant thread! Here's a few pics taken with a recently overhauled external mount 50/1.1 and Nikon SP. A lovely bit of kit that I'm fortunate enough to be the caretaker of for a short while.

Thanks for sharing these and keeping this lovely thread alive! I wish more people would use this lens and post here.

I really like the look of the lens @ f2 in the photograph of shop facade - so gentle.
Am I mistaken or is the distortion well controlled with the 50/1.1 stopped down a little?
I expected some crazy distortion.

Does it share the wild field of focus with the f1 Noctilux wide open where parts of the focus plane are will in focus and other parts are not?

And yes, it looks like … when you are into swirl, you will love the Nikkor 50/1.1 ;-)

Yep, distortion is quite well controlled considering the speed of the lens. I'm not so sure about the plane of focus yet, but sharpness seems good at f1.1 when the focus is right.

Nice Jon! How are these Nikkors behaving through the stops in terms of focus shift?
The Noctilux does like to shift some when stopping down.
The mighty 50/1.1 does show any?

How does it compare in flare with the olympic 50/1.4 / millennium?

I like what I see with the areas in focus wide open. I could imagine it makes a wonderful portrait lens in low light BW without foliage in the background ;-)

Interesting questions Dirk. I don't have enough experience with the 50/1.1 to be able to answer them, but I'd be interested to know too. Perhaps when you get your copy of the lens 😉 you could test it out and give some feedback here!

Oh btw - this looks interesting if anyone is in Hong Kong and looks for a nice deal on a Nikkor 50/1.1 that needs specialist work to repair (no affiliation with the seller):

He looks for 15800 HKD (~ 2,022 USD) for this external mount lens which apparently needs re-cementing of the rear group - a special job for focal point in the US or Kiitos in Japan ?

Anyone knows if such a lens is worth the while and could be fully revived?

Thanks so much to Jon to help out not only finding a beautiful original complete kit as sold when these lenses were new but also to arrange a complete overhaul by the same people in Japan who have actually worked for Nippon Kogaku when these marvels were produced. It is a true pleasure to finally be able to use one of these for what they were intended to be used.
I am going to share more as I am able to get out and use it. Thank you Jon!

stopped down somewhere to ~f5.6 I believe (I use this one currently as my all in one 50mm and have it on the SP at all times)

wide open @ f1.1 (this really is the worst case scenario with this lens - it kind of works in real low light (this was a very slow shutter speed in a VERY dark alley in a very dark bar at ISO 800) and I can see how this lens may have helped people in the 50's and 60's to shoot slow film when their fastest alternative would be a 5cm f1.4 Sonnar.
Nowadays with faster film available (and digital) a Millennium (or Olympic) Nikkor absolutely murders the big 1.1 in performance, so I see for practical reasons a Millennium Nikkor being the better choice, even in low light.
