I would use a 'FLQOO' hood on your Summar
It was designed for the 3.5cm f3.5 Elmar but it can be used on the 5cm Hektor, Elmar and Summar.
I think it is the finest lenshood produced by Leitz, so neat and small and makes it much easier to adjust the aperture on the Hektor and Elmar being wider for the fingers than the 'FISON'.

O, yes, the FLQOO is great, I have four of them. They sell now for EUR 250-300, so ... But they are not good for the Summar: vignetting. The post-war shorter version of the FLQOO, the FOOKH, is the best shade for the Summar.

I think I've paid around €30 and €40 for both my FISON hoods (both are the final chrome models).

I recently picked up a what looks like a shortened version of the FISON for the 3.5cm f/3.5 Elmar from China for a fair price.

Yes, I know the SOOMP, I have one, but that is a very big and unhandy thing. A FOOKH is much handier and gives an as good protection. The SOOMP is nice to collect, but not to use.

Pans idea that the FLQOO is designed for the Elmar 35mm is wrong. "Elmar 35mm" is written on it to tell the user that it can be used on the Elmar 35mm, but it is in fact an universal shade for the 135mm, 90mm, some 50mm (not the Summar) and some 35mm lenses.

Iff (in the mathematical sense) I remember correctly, the FIKUS when squashed right back was for 35mm but then they started to leave off the 35mm mark and yet it could still go back...


The rectangular Summar hood was an awkward lump.

Ebay seller Jack the Hat (or something like it) used to sell a simple, cheap solution for a Summar hood, screw in. This is it:

Yes, David, I agree that the FIKUS is a terrible thing.


Michael that is a great solution, but it will not work for the Elmars. The Elmars do not have a screw-mount.


Your camera is the only black IIIa that I know off. If you want to sell that one, I am interested.

Not sure how to interpret your post on FIKUS. Was considering it for my Summar. Taking a chance on Jack the Hat solution shown in above pic by Michael, but concerned about increased vignetting. Recently saw a Canon series VI hood with a series VI step ring to 34mm. That could work and I could also use series VI filters , if desired. But have a really nice Summar and maybe a shame to stoop soooo loowww to adorn it with a kluge. 🙂 And yes, a black IIIa would be nice too.

The FIKUS works fine on the SUMMAR (and any other A36-sized 50mm lenses), but it's big and heavy compared to other options available (except maybe the VALOO)

But it might cause a bit of vignetting, especially if you have another A36 filter between it and the lens....I know it does on the 35mm Elmar.

Thanks for the response. There is a FLQOO copy fabricator on ebay...somewhere in HK. It's pretty cheap and looks reasonably similar. there are NO bicycle shops in California 🙂 PLenty of muffler shops.

I've not experienced vignetting with Jack the Hat and yes, Erik you are quite right it is no good for Elmars, a black Fison will do. FLQOO is just too damn expensive.

The black IIIa has history with the Ulster Constabulary. When Peter worked on it he said it appeared that it had spent its life at 1/20th. Not sure how he worked that out. Obviously with a 28xxx number it is a pre war conversion.

It's really amazing the quality you can coax from such an old camera. these early models did not have the refinements introduced later to ensure accurate timing of shutter speeds or baffles to eliminate light leaks etc. All the also the flash stuff turns out to be mostly fluff in our modern thinking, but was probably welcome in it's day. I'm really looking forward to seeing the performance out of my summar, even ifon a Bessa R.

I think you have nailed it by sticking to one relatively high shutter speed, that is probably stable, and just adjusting the light with the iris. No slow speeds to betray leaks. Of courses, a good eye.
