Pipe dream: Nikon digital FM-style camera

It does seem to meet many of requests in the thread.
Magnesium alloy, for a lot of the body, backwards lens compatibility, not as large as the D700/300 series.
 
Just to give you a glimmer of hope from an eteral optimist (at least this morning) -- note that at one time, a 24/1.4 AFS, 35/1.4 AFS and 85/1.4 AFS were also the stuff that Nikonista pipe dreams were made of...

And each one is the size of a stovepipe and weighs more than half a kg.
 
Someone will do this... it just makes sense for a smaller company. Nikon and Canon aren't going to do this....
 
My dream spec:

FM3a,
D3 sensor sans AA filter,
shutter, same as FM3a - electronic/ mechanic hybrid shutter with manual cocking
no internal motors,
entirely manual focus,
bigger prism and viewfinder than FM3a (better eye point, bigger Ø),
1 x SDHC card for compact built,
weather sealed,
simplified left controls (windup missing, but less flimsy, more precise and substantial mechanical ISO selection, like on EPSON R-D1),
small 2.5" LCD,
very simple added digital control layout (see Leica M or even S2),
NEF only,
less functions,
less menu clutter,
attachable motordrive for auto shutter cocking and continuous shooting - MD-12 anyone ;-)

Nikon could market this new digital camera as a premium product with a line of only the finest Ai-s lenses.

Everything either available in silver chrome or black piano lacquer.
Leather can be selectable from a few different kinds.

Sell it at a reasonable premium:
body: 3.200 EUR
I see a small market, that is at the moment only catered by Leica and Leica alone.

To top of history and help marketing, make it not a FM3a but A DIGITAL NIKON F !!!
How wonderful would that be!

Finally, the Leica M got back the old competitor with a digital Nikon F

I would buy one on the day of announcement and if it works a second body later on.

It has only been three years

It has only been three years

Given the recent rumours around the forthcoming Nikon dF, it looks as if it has only taken three years for Nikon to take up some of the suggestions contained in this 2010 thread.
Looking forward to seeing what this camera delivers and if it is affordable will maybe get the chance to use my AIS lenses again.
Not long until 5th Nov. :)

I read somewhere that Nikon took out a patent for a digital back for one of their film
cameras, I wonder if they would ever do it?

Doing just fine.
Just sitting here marvelling how so many people could be so involved in discussions about some camera based on a blurry photo, some pictures of what are clearly film cameras and a website that deals in rumours. In other words ......nothing.
First we'll see. And then we'll know.
