I'll be passing through Hong Kong next week on my way in and out of China (conference in Shanghai), and I'm considering buying a scanner. I'm interested in the Epson V750 (first choice) and the Nikon Coolscan 5000. Can anybody suggest a place with one or both of these in stock and approximate prices...
Thanks!

I am based in Singapore, so keep in touch and let me know if you get an answer. The prices for both of the scanners that you mention are 30/50% higher down here.

The best place for locals to buy it would actually be at the "Computer Centre" at Sam Shui Po. This a small and cramp building called Golden Computer Arcade and it's stuffed with stores packed with the latest gizmo and gadgets as well as the usually IT offerings. It's located right next to the MTR station.

By the way, you are more likely to find the Epson than the Nikon there. For Nikon, best to try Man Shing or Wing Shing at Mong Kong, a different part of Kowloon.

Have fun!

Cheers,

Thanks for the kind response, Benny!

For the record, I'd guess the reference is to Mong Kok (旺角), not Mong Kong.

I had a sudden case of appendicitis and had an appendectomy two days ago, so my trip to Shanghai via Hong Kong/Shenzhen was cancelled. Too bad, because I was really looking forward to the theme of that conference and the gathering there...

Since my professional work (writing, research and teaching) takes up so much time, I look for shortcuts in my approach to photography. I'm aware of the costs I pay for these shortcuts in terms of artistic vision. Right now I have an excellent relation with a small pro lab in Taipei and they do hand developing and scanning (Fuji Frontier) for me. If I organize my life to make time for setting up a home darkroom someday (or if I don't have access to such a friendly pro lab), then I will think again about a scanner...wonder if prosumer film scanners will still be marketed by then?

I am new in singapore. Any ideas where I could pick up a V 700 scanner here in Singapore. Most prices are around 850 Sing does that sound abou right

Jon, do you send your film to the lab in Taipei from Shanghai? May I ask for the contact details of the lab? I'm looking for a good lab to send film from Manila.
