You can do better than Sam out here, but it is a reliable standby, sort of like the Starbucks of beer.

I can't believe I just read all eight pages of this!
A summary for the lazy:
The best 35 for your Leica is a 40mm Nokton SC; Russian wines are better than Russian lenses; Americans don't speak any foreign languages, except for the ones who won't speak English; and, don't drink with a lawyer or a Yorkshireman, unless he's buying.
Is that about right?

well I’m not buying! And I still contend the cv f2.5 is the second best 35
That ended well I thought

Magus you are an elitist, but I still like you; and you do need a pleb togging that toga don’t you? Rowland I’m sorry if I don’t come across clearly I think you’re a good chap (in an English sense) and enjoy your contributions. Furcafe thanks for the defence, I was using the allegory to poke gentle fun at Magus over his dismissal of the CV range, sorry for the collateral damage, I’m in Baltimore in June if there’s a free drink……….

No worries Stewart. Funny how a comment by a Brit somehow ended up sparking an argument re: the U.S. Not sure if I'll be up in Baltimore anytime in June, but feel free to ping me when the date gets closer.

I can officially say that I don`t like biogon 35mm for black and white, my wife shot slides with some delta 100 and I find black and white pictures very clinical, clean and flat! sharpness is on the normal side at wide open, slightly disappointed texture after summilux 50 asph with delta 100, anyhow slides are great though! fantastic color! amazing textures! sharpness closed down is fantastic! so verdict is I will fix 35 biogon from wobble problem and keep it for color work and get summilux asph for black and white within this year
not that alot of people care but

Vlad, that sounds like the best of both worlds. I actually prefer using a 50 lens and like you I love the Lux 50 Asph which is a legend of a lens in the making. But let me tell you, I think the Summilux 35 Asph. is sometimes even more interesting, preserving something of the old Leica look and a somewhat gentler performance in contrast even though this is sometimes at the expense of the cutting edge sharpness you see with the Summilux 50 Asph and Summicron 75 AA (the sharpest of them all IMO). Go for it, you will be poor

Sounds excellent, now if only 35 lux asph had focusing lines and not the tab

I know, I am not a big fan either. At least with Summilux 50 Asph. you can use the serated ring - not so with the Summilux 35 Asph. - gotta use it with the tab

Roel, I hope you like the lens! I just got one recently and look forward to your impressions!
I also cannot believe I just read this whole thread, wow, what a trip.
On the Off topic stuff that I probably should not say anything about: I am an American, I majored in French, spent my junior year abroad and REAlly wiish I had the money to go back, for one thing I did not get a chance to see Spain or Italy! Oh and I like German sweat white wines but forget what they are called!

Hey Nancy,
let us know what you think about the Nokton - I am just starting to use mine ... Not sure yet.
And the best German dessert wine is probably a Riesling Eiswein - thick like honey.

Nancy,
Enjoy the Nokton. Show us your results with the lens. My brain keeps going to that lens.

Hi Nancy,
Wish I could already show you some results only the shipment of the lens had some difficulties. I don't have it yet and am waiting for it to arrive. Will give you guys my impression as soon as I have any!
I used the 24mm 2.8 quite a lot in Barcelona instead. Great lens only the evenings were to dark... The 50mm summicron did better there but I really could have used the faster Nokton 40mm. (check my gallery for some of the Barcelona pictures, more coming up)
Well, I suppose it gives me an alibi to go back to Barcelona some day soon!!

I don't like tabs either. But the lenses that have a bigger diameter seem to be more usable, and I think you may find the 35/1.4 ASPH to be acceptable. I was surprised when I went to pick up the lens; it was the first tabbed lens I've felt comfortable with. Then I got the 24/2.8 ASPH and that was the same; a largish diameter on the lens and not bad to use.Nachkebia said:Sounds excellent, now if only 35 lux asph had focusing lines and not the tab![]()

No, the Summicron-C 40mm is not of Summicron quality. Even the 40mm optics of the Minilux outperform it. My opinion.
It was a long read through this thread from go to woe but I thought I should at least take issue to this absurd statement. Not of Summicron quality? Which Summicron? There have been many through the decades and each gernerally improving with time. The 40mm is the equal of version 4 35mm Summicron. Given that it predates the version 4 35 and is a third the price that's not too bad at all. So without doubt the 40mm is of Summicron quality for its vintage. (And its front never unscrews!)
To the statement that even the 40mm Minilux will outperform it, yes it does, in edge to edge resolution and contrast. Its also more modern by some 3 decades and approaches the 35 f2 ASPH in performance. But the manner in which the statement has been said was it meant to deride it in some way? Is there some reason why it shouldn't be outperformed by a 30 year more modern lens? Should the version 4 35 outperform the ASPH as well? Nope. However just as there are those that prefer the character of the version 4 Summicron to the ASPH, a similar preference could be made between the two Leica 40's except for one small fact that only one can be used on an M. So the comment in general seems a bit ridiculous.
For all the generalizations made about a whole brand being bland and similar odd comments made about the 40mm lenses I wonder if they have all been tried by those making the generalizations or just based on web shots by other people?
