That hefty mirror slap takes some getting used to though. Shooting it handheld is pretty much out of the question I fear.
The fomapan image could've used a little more contrast, but I like the overall results.

A Graflex SLR has been on my camera wish list for a while, I just haven't found the right one yet. I agree about the contrast, but you handled the highlights in the metal very well in your image. Fomapan can be a little tricky in that regard, but I really like the film and think it's worth the work.

Handholding is what Graflex SLRs are designed for! the mirror is well damped, it's a non-issue really. I have 2 and get great results handheld all the time.

I decided to do some 4x5 today, but lacked a model so I ended up using a tape measure and some guesswork to do a self-portrait. As I was developing a pair of negatives, our member of parliament (we have a federal election next month) knocked on the door. I knew him long before he first was elected, so I invited him into the darkroom and he watched while his handlers fumed outside. He stayed to see the negatives come out of the tank, and that might just have been the best part of his day (he does 200 doorsteps a day at 2 minutes each!)

I wondered if by developing the multigrade RC paper in Diafine I might get a little speed boost (I didn't) or whether it would tame the contrast (it didn't). Oh well.

Comparison shot using FP4+ in Don Quall's monobath:

Conclusion: shan't bother with Diafine for this purpose!

I've liked shooting with grade 2 RC paper instead of multigrade. Here in the States I get it at Freestyle Photo. I rate it at ISO12 and used liquid concentrate paper developer diluted around 1+15, making sure the chems are at around 68f. I also pre-flash the paper in my darkroom under the enlarger ( or using a homemade light source that uses a 7.5 watt frosted bulb). These have helped me tame excess contrast.

There is some expired APX 100 on the bay that seems too dear for me to bite. It was absolutely wonderful stuff when I was using it.

But ... are you saying there is new APX 100 in 4x5? If so, I missed the announcement. I'm intrigued!
