Plus X no more?

It seems strange but while the Tri-X 400 seems to be an icon among BW films, the Plus-X is much less heard about. I have never used it - I would guess it would be comparable to Ilford FP4+ (which seems to get more attention)

A shame. PX has always been my favorite film. Tonality equal to Pan-X or Pan-F with a really nice unobtrusive grain.

It seems that Ilford will soon be the only viable film producer. As such, I'm making a point to support their films. Jyst bought 3 100ft rolls of HP5.

This is a real shame. It's an older emulsion that's capable of producing really rich tones, esp. lovely dark grays. Very foregiving, too. One of my favorite b&w films. Sad to see it go. RIP Plus-X.

Oh sh!t ... now we're stuck with that new fangled T-max rubbish! It's near as bad as shooting digital ... characterless!

Another beautiful Film bites the dust. I always wondered why it wasn't used by more people, after all most of the famous fashion photographers (Herb Ritts, Peter Lindbergh, Demarchelier, etc) choose PX 125 when they needed a lower speed alternative to TX 320. I have to say that FP4 is no substitute for PX. Fp4 might have been the better allrounder but under the right lighting conditions PX was easily the most beautiful B&W Film in existence delivering a creaminess and subtlety no other film was able to do. If it helps Kodak I am all for cutting the film, but I will still miss it. 🙁

Quote from the announcement:
While there is no direct replacement for PLUS-X 125 Film, you may find TMAX 100 — the world's finest–grained 100 speed black-and-white film, to be a reasonable alternative.

'Reasonable' alternative? not 'Best' alternative?
It sounds like they don't believe in their own product 🙂

This is sad from the perspective of another emulsion got axed, but Ilford FP4 is a good alternative and so is TMAX 100

... or even TMAX 400:

Actually the TMAX (both 100 and 400) in Rodinal 1+50 gives out very nice tones without that "characterless grey look". I tried that combination by accident once because I was developing a self-bulk-loaded rolls for a friend of mine who forgot what film was it.

This is bad news no matter which way you slice it - even for those who didn't use Plus-X it does not bode well for the rest of the range 🙁

I just bought a bunch of Plus-X. I hope I don't like it. 😉 I've gotten good results from FP4+ but the price is a little more dear. I also picked up 4 rolls of Efke KB100 to try, it is a little cheaper than the Ilford stuff.

I'd like to just pick one and stick with it, but at this rate I'll just be taking what I can get.

I just remembered I have twenty rolls of Plus X in the freezer that I bought off an eBay seller a couple of years ago for $1.25 per roll!

I gotta say though, as much as we might complain about them shutting down another film, this thread has been up ALL DAY and there's only 20 responses so far. Either we're just not paying attention to this thread, or Kodak is right about the (lack of) demand for this film.

If it was Tri-X we'd be well past 200 posts.

I just hope it doesn't some day come down to just one choice for b/w film. At least not while I"m around still.
