Last week after getting a bunch of film, I decided to load my Electro 35 GSN with some Ultramax 400. I haven't been shooting with this baby for quite a while so I thought it was about time!
I popped the in battery and then loaded the film. Next I checked the battery- the counter lit up just fine. So I adjusted the aperture and watched for the over/under exposure light. At f/2, the warning light was silent, I closed the lens stop by stop but it wouldn't respond. I thought that the camera could handle it so I set it to f/4 and took a picture anyway. Keep in mine that I was shooting under a tent at that time.
Later, when I was indoors, I was planning to take a shot again, this time, was waiting for the exposure to come on. Guess what- the meter was silent when I set to f/16! I walked outside where it was still sunny and set the aperture to f/2, still dead! Dang! So there goes my camera?
The ISO dial was set to 400, following the film, and the camera was in auto mode. I did try taking out the battery and putting it back in again, but it still produced the same result- a fast shutter speed in a dimly lit room at f/16.
Another shocking thing was when I placed my camera into Bulb mode, and held the shutter button down, the camera still fired as if it was 1/500 per second! In other words, I had the back of the camera open and when I held the button down when it is on B mode, the leaf shutter just budged a little, and closed...
A thing or two to note is that the meter did come on occasionally, at certain positions of the shutter button. If I remembered correctly, both lights was on and when I looked through the viewfinder, the underexposure light was on, but the shutter speed sounded as if it still as a fast shutter speed. Oh, and my camera has the Yashica "Thump" too... When you pull the advance lever a bit, it will first give a thump, then wind on and it will let out the usual gear sounds... Strangely, it was like that when I first got it and the camera could expose the pictures correctly!
So is this a case POD or just simply weak batteries?
Sorry for the long post everyone, and have a nice day.
