I *really* want a Ricoh GR1s/v. Maybe it's because I watched the Daido Moriyama documentary recently, but I really dig the small size and fast, contrasty f2.8 28mm lens.

I'm not too familiar with P&S's though. Any others out there that are comparable to the GR1s or GR1v? The only other ones I've really looked at so far are the Yashica T4 and the Contax T2.

Any others I should consider? I'm comfortable spending $300-$350 but don't really want to go higher than $500. I shoot in a lot of low-light situations, so an f/2.8 or 3.2 would be ideal. A decent flash with a slow-sync option would be great to have too.

I had a GR1 and now have a GR1v and as much as I have enjoyed them their electronics are very fragile, even if the camera is treated very well.

The GR1 used to lock up sometimes. Even removing the battery did not clear it. I can still use my GR1v but the top display is mostly inoperative, meaning I have no frame count, and other info is missing too.

Some P+S cameras have a significant time delay even if you pre-focus. The GR series are quick.

Nikon 28Ti and Fujifilm Klasse W of which I have both. The Fuji is smaller of the two. Both have great sharp lenses. Never shot with a GR1.

Yeah, the only real negative I hear about the GR1's are the flakey LCD's. Makes me very nervous about dropping $350+ on a loose GR1s/v.

Those Fujifilm Klasse W's look very nice. Might have to put that one on my consideration list too.

A warning about the GR-1 series: it's extremely difficult to get them serviced when they break. And they do break. 🙁

I'd second Konica Off-road - it's great camera but unfortunately can not compare to GR series because of lack of control over aperture. Thus also Yashica P&S are way off....Not many film compacts have control over exposure boyond +1.5EV, spot meter and flash modes.

There is the Fuji "Tiara" or "Mini DL", It has a sharp 28mm f/3.5 lens, is very pocketable, has snapshot focus mode (if I remember correctly), as well as various flash modes. Good bokeh too.

AND, they're not too expensive (around 100 USD), AND I'm looking to sell mine (PM me if you're interested).

Here are some photos I took with it.

I'd say don't worry too much. Go ahead and get one, there is really no other one that fits your hand like a GR1.

After two years and constant use my GR1s finally started to show missing parts of LCD digits in cold weather. It still shoots just fine, I just have to keep a mental note on how many frames are still left.

On the other hand I have sheets of negative and prints of nice pictures from that camera (the lens is unbelievable, but you know that already). These will stay with me long after the camera gave up. That is almost priceless.

But then again, I didn't pay $350 for mine 🙂

So many nice point & shoots mentioned here...it's hard to pick just one. The Fuji Tiara and Minolta TC-1 especially. Think I'll still get both of those even if I do end up getting a GR1, just to see what all the hype is about.

Today I just started shooting a roll with the $3 Leica Mini 3 i found last week at a thrift store. I guess I'll see how those turn out first before I start going on a P&S buying spree.

my votes go to TC-1 and 28 ti,

the TC-1 for sheer compactness unmatched interface and nice body built

the 28ti smooth, silent, fast, and matrix metering

I can vouch for the Klasse (I had the S not the W), it's a lovely camera, very sharp lens, and good controls. In photos it kind looks cheapish, but in real life it's metal and very nicely built. If you're not fussy about metal build, manual controls, or a prime lens, the Fujifilm Natura Classica looks nice, and is cheaper than the Klasse.

Fujifilm Tiara with Fuji 400Xtra - cropped - but you get to see the bokeh.

Ricoh Gr1s on Reala also slight crop.

Also like my Nikon AF600 and Olympus XA4 but don't have images easily to hand. ThHe Ricoh gr1 is my overall fav. 28mm compact - allows good control and filters.. GR1v is the pick but the $, because you can also manually set ISO.
