Point & shoots comparable to the Ricoh GR1?

Go for the GR1. Great camera, very slim and easy to take with you. Dial in your aperture and exposure comp, put it in Snap mode and go. I leave my Leica home a lot.

My hit rate on it is better than anything else I've shot with. I originally bought it to make me shoot more spontaneously with less thought and it did just that.

I thought I lost mine, well I did lose mine on the Long Island Railroad and put in a lost and found report not thinking I'd ever see it again. and actually got it back two weeks later.

I was so devastated in the interim that I picked up a basically brand new one on eBay which is now sitting in a closet for when and if the first one dies.

My pick is the GR1 for black and white and the Yashica T4 for color. Something about the T4 lens is just brilliant for color.

I use Tiara only in AF- haven't used the manual mode so far.

Because they didn't sell that many. It was quickly replaced but Tiara Zoom. Please post some of the pictures once you've got them back!

So many fine cameras mentioned but do they really can replace GR?....for me GR stands distinct because it has control over aperture. Do you value this in compact camera or take it as extravagancy of manufacturer?

I was just reading about the GR10's the other day. Basically the same camera as the GR1 but lacks exposure compensation and aperture priority, right?

I'd consider getting a GR10 but the used prices don't seem much different than the GR1's. If I could find one for under $100 though, I'd definitely snatch it up.

Yes, Ricoh GR10 is basically a GR1 in permanent P mode.
I just got one from Japan last week. Under $100, mint in box except for the LCD with some digits missing. ( In the box I found the official retail price tag by Ricoh: 60000 Yen!) Shooting its first roll of film now. 🙂

GR10 is such a good-looking camera with equally good ergonomics. It's highly regarded in Japan, AFAIK. Ricoh has managed to make it both consistent & unique in the R/GR family.

I have Fujifilm Tiara, too. It’s another design beauty with 28mm lens. On the other hand, it is kind of noisy... that matters only if you’re concerned about it at all.

I wonder what Ricoh did wrong with LCD on G*-series, hearing it all the time. LCD's on their SLR's are strong, never heard of or experienced failure.

What do you all think of the Nikon L35AF? I've always gotten excellent results from it.

I used to have one. The Nikon is an excellent camera but quite big and with a noisy drive. The lens is exceptional - there is it's story here: http://imaging.nikon.com/history/nikkor/33/index.htm

I always thought the drive was noisy until I used a Leica Mini II. Every part of its operation is noisy, from turning it on to shooting and then turning it off again. It makes the L35AF sound positively quiet. Same with the Canon MC, another camera with a stellar lens but ridiculously noisy drive. Cool camera though! Thanks for the link to the story on the L35AF. I feel like I've rediscovered it!

Haven't had Nikon, but lens on MC is...well, good! I gave it away as I didn't like noisy operation, weight and finicky focus lock. Probably, because I didn't get keepers within a short timeframe (not a camera's fault). Interesting look, but XA2 works for me better - in pocketable AE camera department. I know, you didn't like XA2.

The lens on the MC is superb, very sharp, but the camera is very noisy. It sounds like a small paper shredder every time the film advances. Well, that may be a bit of an exaggeration but not much of one. I like the camera but the noise puts me off every time. It's worth finding one just to experience it. I like the L35AF better overall because it's actually quieter. Otherwise, I think they are close but I'd give the edge to the L35AF.
