OK, this may sound daft so apologies in advance.
Use a cheaper Cokin or Kood square resin polarising filter and hold it to the eye, being square its easy to remember the angle. Just hold it in front of the lens at the same angle to take the shot. I do it all the time with red and yellow filters for black and white shots. This is also a lot quicker than taking the hood off adding filter and replaceing the hood. Beware of glare when shooting into the sun though.
