I think a more effective limit would be to cap the number of photos allowed to be stored by any one user or limiting the amount of storage. (e.g. say 15 MB). That strategy is much more effective in limiting bandwidth and storage issues.

If someone has no photos in their gallery and then uploads a dozen in one day and leaves it at that, that person is much less of a 'problem' than the person who has 75 photos up and uploads three a day every couple of days.

Putting that sort of limit on our gallery would also encourage people to remove old photos when they're getting ready to upload new ones - makes the gallery more dynamic.

I vote for two per day. One thing I like about the gallery is the diversity of photos being displayed at any given time. Clicking and seeing only the work of one member is disappointing.

I don't see why limiting the total amount of images in one's personal gallery should concern anyone but Jorge, he's the one paying for the server.

I voted for three photos a day. So I will be able to upload my top three of a roll if there are that many shots I like.

yeah ok, we can do the math and say 4 per day is 28 per week, but i know many here who upload only once or twice in a month. Like myself. Or take Remy, as example, when he comes back from Mongolia with a bucket load of film, he certainly has more than a few interesting images to upload, all of a sudden.

Your concern is understood and agreed with, but I do think the gallery is for all and it is unfair if I post an image and it doesn't spend any time in the Recent Upload gallery and isn't seen for others to make comments. I think a good solution would be if there was a way in which the software would only allow the first (I voted for 5) 5 images to be loaded into the public gallery and for additional uploads to be placed in the Member's Gallery but not to appear as a Recent Upload. That would allow for large batch uploading, but still give shots a chance to stay public for viewing for a little longer.

I personally have done both things, I have batch uploaded, and also limited myself and uploaded a group of images over a week.

Hey M

The point to limiting the number of photos in the galleries and setting a defined file size now is so that we do not have to revisit this issue again in the future. Especially when anticipating this site to grow to the point that we no longer have the space.

I was just at the gallery, after having finally been able to get away from my computer for several hours, when I got back I was able to get caught up quickly using the "Last Uploads" button (one click). There's a lot of diversity there and the number of postings range from 1 to 15 images per member. Getting past the big uploads was no problem.

I guess I'm having a hard time understanding the arguemnt that members who load up more than two images/day are preventing other members from seeing a variety or diversity of images.

At this point, with membership growing, I think we would be better served with a total limit, and some display size restrictions.

:)

If you can see all the latest uploads via the 'Last Uploads' link, why bother having a limit when you can see them all anyway? I see no point in display size restrictions either. People have their monitors set up differently to others. So while it might look good on one persons computer, it might end up being teeny tiny on someone elses. File size I can see a point. Save on bandwidth.

If people want a limit, then limit away. But the limit may make your own gallery messy. Specialy if you have 10 photos to upload and you want them in the same gallery and you can only do 2 at a time and cant put them in to the same gallery. Unless you can select a gallery you already have made when uploading the rest of them?

I am one of the "guilty" people, I guess. With the new Gallery, I can finally get in. I uploaded ten photos. This was my first attempt at displaying on the internet and the quality was not good. Like some, I think a personal storage limit makes more sense. I have deleted the photos. This discussion has put a chill on my desire to use the gallery. Maybe my shots would never be "good" enough for some people. I could care less if my pictures show up in The Recent Uploads. Maybe we should have the choice to not show up there. Sorry for the negativity, this is the first time I have felt this way about RFF.

jw, sorry you feel that way.
i think one of the reasons this conversation is happening in the first place and we want to see other pics and our own pics in the gallery, for longer than a few minutes.

so we really do want to see your pics, honestly.
i wouldn't worry about 'good enough' right now, one of the reasons to post a pic is to get a bit of feedback.

If you click on the lastest uploads link at the top you can see all of the pics uploaded for the last few days or more. You dont have to sit on the front page reloading to see whats been uploaded.

jw, let me support Joe's comments. This is a conversation and by no means a comment about any one member. Please keep posting and viewing the gallery, I use it as a great tool for myself and my learning process. Like I mentioned before, there have been times I have uploaded groups of images over a few days, and others that I have done all at once. Right now, there is no right way, or rules to follow. There may be, and if they are introduced it will be to improve the gallery, not to stop something that is wrong.

I am sorry that you feel that way and I got a similar feeling from some of the comments. I do the best I can and if it is not good enough for some tough t-t. I would post what I like if I were you and not worry about it. I just feel that some limits per day/total and or standard file sizes may help in the future when the site grows.

I voted for more than six. I don't think we should limit people. I know I don't like having limitations placed on me, and I would probably find it frustrating and perhaps irritating.

And honestly, I don't see the rate that someone posts to the gallery as a problem. Sure, they take up the entire "Last Uploads" section on the main page of the Gallery, but that's OK: There's a way in the gallery to view pages and pages of pictures sorted by upload date. Simply click the "Last Uploads" button in the Gallery toolbar, and you can scroll through hundreds of recent uploads. It's easy to skip by any overzealous postings that you don't like, and see all of the other recent work that's been added.

I think there was a lot of action in the first few days of the gallery because some people had to reupload photos and some new members decided to take the plunge. I say wait a week and see how things go and then take action you see is suitable, you are already doing us a great favor by allowing us to upload anything in the first place.

Personally, I prefer all limits to be self-imposed, rather than dictated to me.

More than 6. On principle, more than practicality. I doubt I've uploaded more than 3 on a given day personally.

I say 3 or 4. But I think it would be better a week limit (3 x 7 = 21 or 20 ) because many people have not the possibility to post every day (away from home during the week). To have a limit force people to make a selection which is not so bad for any personal grow . Just my 2 cents, of Euro...of course

I really don't care what the number is. I have been storing most of my images somewhere where there is no limit. There, I simply upload the entire roll. Here, I post a few images per day.

I tend to shoot pictures in series', and like to post an entire series at once. Looked at individually they offer far less to the viewer than taken as a whole. I upload photos pretty seldom, but having to load only five per day in a series of 20 photos is mildly annoying. So for that reason, I'd prefer a weekly limit over a daily one.
That said, I appreciate and enjoy the gallery!
