My point is that the Western World's 100 year love affair with the infernal combustion engine must stop soon but cameras are a fairly harmless luxury in comparison.
That is a sentence to remember. Pardon me for saying a few words that are "off topic".
The oil era ends:
- Even americans consider buying cars that need less fuel
- Airlines cut capacity
So, everyone has a choice:
- Ignore the crisis and just complain about high gas prices (nagging does not help)
- Ignore the crisis and be a "Mitläufer". Expect questions from your children in a few years
- Do something
I do not know whether the term "Mitläufer" is known here.
In 1945, after WW2 had ended, the allies classified the Germans into categories in order to sort out who was a war criminal, who was involved in other crimes of the regime and who was a "Mitläufer", e.g. running with the crowd, a fellow-traveler. Most Germans, especially the ones who were needed for the reconstruction of the devastated country, were "Mitläufer", even if there was some evidence that they were Nazis. Of course, everybody metamorphosed into a member of the resistance during that time, and nobody had ever heard of all those camps...
Some people here will hate me for that but I think today we all have a choice: get involved with ecology or become a Mitläufer.
Global warming and the global food crisis have the same roots. Ignoring the effects of our lifestyle and continuing means that people will die in many areas of the world - and it will not only be those exotic countries far away.
Some typical sentences that reveal that you think like a Mitläufer:
- "I had no idea, heard about all that in 2040, the year of the great flood in New York."
- "I didn't read newspapers and was not interested in politics, e.g. I did not know either."
- "The politicians and Exxon told us that everything is fine."
- "I just did what I was told."
- "I did like everybody else."
- "The chinese were much worse."
- "As a single person I could not change anything."
What is your choice?
