I recommended the M-Hex 50mm 2.0

Some of the modern lens' missing from this poll are the VC 50/1.5 and the 50/1.1. The 50mm heliars are also missing.

And where is the noctilux (all 3 versions please), you can't have a decent poll about 50mm lens' without the noctilux.. right?

yep, I'm also for the collapsible summicron- I love mine! Just takes some luck to find one that's not too beat up though.

Here's one of my favorites with a nice range of tones from the collapsible 'cron.

The Heliar 50mm 3.5 is also an amazingly good 50mm lens. I can vouch for it. The Heliar 50mm 2.0 is nearly as good, but faster and also excellent.

I shoot B&W with the Current Summicron, an Elmar-M and ASPH Summilux lenses. Each brings a different look to the film. I rarely use the pre-ASPH Summilux with B&W.

I have a ZM Sonnar but i'm always fascinated by the 50mm Summilux preasph ( which i don't have unfortunately ) The tones/bokeh are so fantastic...If i had to buy and stay with only one lens it would be this one or a 35mm Summilux

For versatility, quality and perhaps also price I am totally smitten with my Canon Serenar 50mm f/1.8 (mk 1 all chrome) -- quite heavy and not as compact as some lenses but not that big, now VF blockage, and sharp as a tack, excellent performer wide open too.

I got one for about £40 (it's LTM so you may need a LTM->M adapter.)
