Since I'm contemplating the purchase of a (1995) 50 mm 'Cron, this thread is of special interest to me. There is a lot of solid experience showing here.
At the same time there is a number of steps in getting from the capture lens to the final print that surely play an important role and can't be ignored.
For instance, I've settled on XP2 as the film of choice, Nikon (4000) scanner, ink jet printing, carbon-only inks and cotton-rag-only paper. I wonder how sharply the specific choice of 50 mm lens would stand out in this workflow?

The CV 50/2 Heliar seems a little soft wide open compared to great lenses listed here. I'm just judging from the samples I've seen.
Leica is famous for performing excellently at all aperatures, esp. wide open. By all the dicussions, many Zeiss and CV lenses are meeting the challenge these days.

They all work fine if you tune the developing time to the lens. It is color where you get into trouble.
I have beautiful Summarit pics, DR and rigids, three elmars, version 3 from 1969, and two summitars. All are nice, just different. Although those from a given time period are very similar.
The only one I disliked was the original coll 50 2.0. Sharp but too low a contrast.

Another vote for a Rigid Cron. I have used it, Summitar, which is also very nice, Planar ZM, Summicron 3rd (I think - black, no tab no hood), Hexanon, several Russian lenses - I-22, ZK, J-3. And for B&W, WHile all have something, Rigid is just WOW, for b@w. Colour - not su much for me. For that I use Hex.

50/2 Hexanon is my Second Fav. for Black and white photos - more modern look, very sharp and has great bokeh as well. Hard to beat:

I'm currently deciding between a '07 summicron and an '06 Elmar M...I have to sell one but cant really decide which I prefer at the moment....

I've got three M mount 50's right now, and find both Leica 50's I have, the current Summicron and the current Elmar to be my favorites. The Summicron, when handled well and film is run well can give 1620 prints of remarkable beauty.
This image is one shot with the Summicron, at 5.6 in great light, on FP4+, developed in HC-110b. I print this at 16x20, with fine detail visible and well defined in the fence, the window and the shingles.
This one is also with the Summicron at 8 or 11, and shows crisp shadowed edges in the chain link all the way out to the edges. I can't ask for better performance from a lens than this.
Nothing this big from the Elmar yet, but from what I've seen thus far, it is quite close in performance.
