This issue is getting too much time and efforts here.
I am more interested in taking photos than in dwelling on this issue.
A website is not "real life". Don't make it sound so life threatening.
You can always delete your own postings at any time.
I do not see a problem at all.

Considering there are three long threads about this, there are plenty of people who think it needs discussion 🙂

Although as I said before, nothing is going to change, whether members discuss or not.

If there actually *is* a vbulletin admin option for post deletion time limit, that might be a catalyst for further evaluation among the powers that be. 🙂

I guess I have to agree. It's a forum, nobody is having their novel or family history deleted. I'm sort of disappointed now in how little faith members seem to have in other members at this point in the discussion.

I'll congratulate most of you for being reasonable people capable of taking care of their own posts though. 🙂

We have currently 47 voters that want to keep the status quo and 51 that want to limit the individual's deletion power somehow.

Can we find a compromise ? I for one agree that longer threads should remain, independent of the OP (I have started 35 such threads, BTW). On the other hand, I would like to keep the flexibility to delete threads within a day or two because they are being troll'ed.

What's the right middle ground ?

Roland.

If a short thread goes toxic, the OP can simply request that a moderator close it.

If a particular poster gets vulgar in an ongoing interesting thread, a mod can delete the vulgar postings and ban the offender.

IMO, deleting an entire thread longer than X postings is a very very bad
privilege to give anyone.

That's middle ground? Isn't it ?

I agree Dave, if X is, say, a dozen posts or so. However, that might be hard to implement. I am guessing limiting the time window for allowed editing is easier to get since already supported by vbulletin.

So, we have some people saying that the posts that get deleted are not that important to worry about. And the other ones that don't like it when their or other people's posts get deleted. According to the poll, it's a 50:50 split.

First group could still retain all the control of their content if deletion would be prevented and unlimited editing allowed. Yet, they argue that is not enough.

They want to be able to moderate (take down) other people's contributions to the forum through this OP deletion "feature".

The tricky part is that there's no option that says, "Sure, users should be allowed to delete their posts. But what they shouldn't be allowed to do is delete the posts of other users, possibly against their will, as collateral damage."

To the OP: it just occurred to me that the deletion of the portrait thread that caused you to start this poll was not done by Dave but by the Moderators ...

To the others: sorry to interrupt your argument, carry on 🙂

Yes, as has just been revealed. 🙂 So some of the assumptions that have been made over the past few days are erroneous.

Looks like pure accident; not scorched earth.

I can just see a new thread being started asking for moderators to have their deletion powers taken away now. 🙄

edit: let me add a LOL just so people know I'm joking.

not exactly accurate...it was done by stephen per Dave's request,
while i have the abilty to delete someone from rff stephen is the only one with the authority to do it.
when/if someone askes me to delete their account from rff that request gets passed on to stephen.
no mod can delete an account.

OP (of this thread) pointed out that only options that needed no modification of the forum software were presented in the poll.

Understandable, but it's worth noting that option #1 is not synonymous with "maintain the status quo".

Roland, your point above presumes all this is redundant. I would argue this is not the case. This poll was really just a pulse taking exercise, but to me, as long as users have the ability to delete their own posts, as is the current status quo, then disappearing threads will continue.

My own personal view is this ability of users is grossly unfair to the community here, but I would hope I have been careful enough to keep my own views from colouring the matter at hand, and simply opening a dialogue through which this could be all be discussed openly and seeing what the view of rff at large was.
