Thank you Kamph! I don't think SM5000 or even the SM11000 will come close to this. It is absolutely insane that Tango can see this because even with a loupe on a very bright lightbox, I don't see some of the details that are captured without any muddiness or noise by the Tango.

Exactly! I would have never thought this slide would be something that I would scan and share with everyone. I quite like the final image and I am sure your kodachrome will shine on a Tango too!

Thank you brbo! I know Tango's are particular sought after for their shadow performance and now I know why.

Jack, this is straight from the scanner software (Newcolor v2.2 on Mac OS 10.2). I followed the extended range profile tutorial from hutchcolor (link here) to create a profile to open up the shadows. In the software, there is an exposure setting which defaults to 0 and can be changed to -10 to +10. I changed this to +7 for this scan. Scanned as Tiff ProPhoto RGB 16 BIT and then adjust the white point slide on the levels. Simple as that!

If I shot more positives a Tango would be at the top of my wishlist for sure. For negatives I'm guessing the Scanmates might actually be slightly better given their smaller aperture and thus theoretical higher resolution? I also find that the inversion proces is rather straight forward on my SM5000 - I rarely need to do a lot more than choose a black point and do a slight curves adjustment.
Recently I started doing enlargements in my dark room again and was surprised at how closely my wetprints matched my scans in tonality. The scans from the SM5000 looks analog as silly as that might sound. Still wishing for a solution to the 16bit bug though (grr)!

Kamph, that is my conclusion as well. I was not in the market for a Tango and would have never bought it had it not been for the SM11K board being lost in mail scare that I had for 3 months. Because of the situation, I started looking for a replacement SM11K and instead found a Tango which I am very happy about. I don't think Tango is necessary if you already have a good working drum scanner unless you shoot slides that have deep shadow details.

SM5K is an amazing scanner for most slides as well. Keep in mind that SM5K and SM11K resolve more shadow detail at the higher DPI settings.

I've noticed this as well. I was wondering if one might be able to get better shadow performance if one was to choose a larger aperture (at the expense of some resolution of course)? I've heard that choosing the smallest aperture on some of the Howtek scanners will introduce more noise in the shadows but i'm not sure if this is the case with the SM. They have different light sources after all.
 
I scanned another version from the same roll at 5000 DPI to see how much resolution is there on the XPan image on Prova 100F. No surprise, there is amazing detail on the slide and this point and shoot camera can make quite big enlargements.
