Just atypical. Plus-X was so smooth. It looks good, I’d just never have guessed Plus-X.

Very nice - beautiful tonality and smooth finish.

Here is another from the same roll as the fence image - slightly better but still grainy - nowhere near the results as your processing and workflow produced. 🤷🏻‍♂️

As an aside, within the past month, I just did a side by side comparison of Double-X in various dilutions/times of Pyrocat-HD (all semistand or EMA), with conventional development in HC-110B, D-76 1:1, and D-23 1+3 semistand for 30min. From best to worst (grain and tonal smoothness) they scored like this:

D-76 1:1
D-23 semistand
HC-110B
Pyrocat-HD Semistand/EMA

No matter what I did with Pyrocat, the Double-X negatives turned out to have a gritty look and showed a lot of grain.

I have yet to try Double-X in conventional Pyrocat-HD agitation at 1:1:100.

I'm also doing some testing with Tri-X to see which particular developer/agitation scheme works best there as well.

I develop double-x in D-96 and get good result, but I don't like to mix chemicals so I switch to HC-110 instead.

I use HC-110 1+49, develop at 20°C for 10 min. and get ok-ish result. One image from this morning walk:

That's a fine image but it has more grain than I like. Either the D-76 or D-23 options I noted will calm that grain down. Part of the issue here is that, the more you dilute HC-110, the more it starts to act like an acutance developer. Then then serves to accentuate grain. With larger formats it's not a big deal, but with 35mm it becomes noticeable.
