PS. Ok guys should we start a new foveon thread in the slr sub forum or do u just want to keep everything here?

Gary

I think we should keep it here Gary ... unless you think there's suddenly going to be a huge influx of SD1M users into the ranks of RFF.

I may have to buy one just so the few brave souls who actually own one here don't get lonely! :D

A photo from yesterday. I've been out to this exact spot often in winter to capture the blond winter grasses that appeal to me so much and never managed to come home with anything that pleased me. Minimal post procssing in SPP aside from setting the colour to vivid and a little increase in contrast ... It's a hell of a sensor at ISO 100.

nice golden color, keith, and i'm guessing there's some nice detail to the grass at larger size. funny how it's this weird little camera that can capture it the way you see it.

It's quite tragic to convert a TIFF to a compressed jpeg sized for web and see all the detail disappear when you post it somewhere.

It never really bothered me until I got the DPM. :p

This camera does black and white to die for IMO and I'm fast coming to the conclusion that SPP is a pretty decent piece of software.

Thanks Helen I've been wondering how you've been getting on with the Merrill?

I think the DPM's sensor suits my photography and especially this ^ sort of image ... not so sure how you'll relate to it for the beautiful gritty contrasty work I associate you with. I guess the thing with digital is ultimately you can give it whatever look you want in post once you become familiar with the sensor's characeristics.

Did you see the link Gary posted about using SPP?

Gary

beautiful blue...i love it!

When I went out to the valley behind Brisbane to shoot landscapes yesterday I did so with the Leitz finder on the camera ... VlOOH.

It made me realise that I really don't like composing with an LCD screen that much. Seems like a good reason to own an SD1M to me! :D

There is actually a lot of detail that does not show up because of the web size posting. Jpgs of any size for webposting does not do the pictures justice.

I tend to shrink everything down to 1024 max for web posting.. When u c the original raw on your CPU display for this first time, u are blown away by the fine detail. The raw to tiff16 is my preferred output media fr internal use. The files are very large. A medium size raw in the neighborhood of 22-26mb will end up about 40mb tiff. A full size raw with is around 46-50mb and converts to a 80mb tiff file. Tons of detail to work with...

I bought a DP3M to accompany my DP2M. I like the bokeh out of this lens and the already established amazing sharpness down to 100%

Some shots from Sigma Sd1m w/ 70f2.8 macro

All images shot hand held, mid size RAW files, ISO 100, Neutral Color setting

This close up of the leaf was not quite parallel to the plane of the leaf, the bottom left corner not quite in focus due to how close I was. Macro ratio close to 1:1, 1/800@f7.1

SDIM0512.jpg

These next two were originally shot in Neutral color setting in camera but changed to Vivid in SPP. Both were somewhere between 1:2 and 1:1 macro ratio.

This next one of the leaf was shot somewhere between 1:3 and 1:2 macro ratio. I love how u can c the detail in the leaf as well as the fine hair at the edges. Back to neutral color setting.

I think this thread has done a lot to aleviate the camera and the foveon sensor from the 'curiosity' perception that many people seem to have of it and label it as a serious photographic tool capable of producing draw droppingly good images.

Someone (who shall remain nameless for their own safety) in another thread actually did refer to the foveon sensor as a 'curiosity' and I have to say I did get my hackles up just a little! :p
