Processing RAW files

Hi, i'm a new comer to the x100 having resiliently stood by my m8 for years. Amazing photos here guys!
I have a simple question:
I'm getting amazing output in my JPEG (i shoot raw+jpeg) but the raw files are either horrendously underexposed or not anywhere close to as nice when i open them in adobe camera raw. I have tried applying the fuji x100 profiles which have solved the colours to an extent but the files often lack the dynamic range of the jpeg and are very underexposed. What am i doing wrong?

If you have the Dynamic Range setting at anything other than 100, you'll often get underexposed Raw files, while the DR-adjusted Jpegs will be more-or-less as you expected. If you set DR at 100 (effectively, this is OFF) then the Jpegs and Raw should roughly match... but then, of course, you don't get the DR compensation from the camera.

Ok, so am i right in understanding that I should just stick to JPEGs to fully utilise this camera? I have no issues with that personally as smaller files are easier to handle on my old computer anyway. I always just a assumed raw would be better....

I don't think that you need to take it quite that far...:). Stick to Jpegs if you prefer, of course, but the Raw files should, in general, provide more latitude in post-processing. This whole complication only arises if you use the DR settings of the camera while shooting Raw + Jpeg, since it does some 'trickery' to achieve the improvement in Dynamic range, in the Jpegs.

There is some more detailed information on fujix-forum dot com in a thread entitled "x100s DR settings" (see post #3), which might help to clarify all this stuff. [I can't post a link, since annoyingly, the link gets replaced by asterisks:mad:].

Hope it helps.

when i first got my camera a year a go i thought the pictures were horrendously underexposed -- so i always shoot with ev knob adjusted at +1/3 to +2/3. i also only shoot raw, i don't think i ever saw what a jpg out of camera looks like on mine.

i don't do any batch processing in lightroom, i adjust each picture individually and i'm always amazed with how much detail you can pull out of that raw file.
