I can't really say much as I don't have an X100 but The trend I'm seeing is that people get a camera like this that is easy to take everywhere and they start just snapping away at nothing. I don't think that just because you are on the street snapping random images, you are a street photographer.
I'm seeing some beautiful images in here but I'm also seeing lots of ho-hum stuff.
I guess with all of the hype surrounding the X100 I expected better...

Well, we all know the X100 is a camera, and it's the person who ruin the photo.
And going by that argument, should we be even more upset by the M9. It costs 5x as much but we don't see 5x as many good shots.

You don't need an X100 to make a comment any more valid. This thread is not just street and not just great photos necessarily. But there are some great photos. Meanwhile some of the capacities of the camera are of interest, e.g. the look of macro at f2, or the high ISO performance. I haven't used digital cameras much. The sort of low light things I have been able to do in the last week bowl me over. Some people will come here to see what the camera can do.

Well, some of the images above are quite good and some are not so good. I don't think it has anything to do with the camera and has everything to do with the camera operator. Perhaps this just shows this camera is as good as any other. In that sense it is perfectly capable, not any more or less capable than any other good camera..

I guess what I meant was that, while I appreciate all of it and I can more than appreciate pushing a cameras limits for the sake of presentation of quality, a lot of shots I see with X100s lately are just mundane images of people milling about on busy streets with no rhyme or reason. It's almost becoming a steady trend with this camera.
There are some extraordinary shots here though and I'm extremely impressed with the output of that camera. I keep viewing threads about it with the mindset that I may pick one up...
I wish I had a place that I could go to see one in person.

I think the same can be said of any new camera, or any camera at all in fact.
And, a lot of street photography is just pople milling around on the street.

don't get me wrong, the files from the camera are great, it's just more complicated to get good black and whites from digital files than from negatives 😉

One thing though, do you do local adjustments or global adjustments only?

I think I did some minor local adjustments on one of them, the rest is done 'globally'

Think of it as 'time spent' as you would in making a good print from a neg. The time you spend in the 'darkroom' is still needed to get that extra % in the look you want - traditional or digital. If an image is deserves it, then the time you spend on it is worth it for the end results.

Of course, one is always going to see both good and bad photos from any camera, which makes is difficult to judge image quality from a new camera by pictures on the internet, particularly from the initial pictures one sees from the first people who got the camera, who may not have had enough time to get used to shooting with the camera.
What I found amazing, though, is how good the bulk of the photo were on a thread here of Ricoh DRD3 picture — that thread had a much higher proportion of very good photos than a thread on the LUF taken with the Leice M9 and M8. Of course that does not mean that the GRD3 is a better camera than the Leica M-digital cameras, but only that a lot of good photographers have adopted the GRD3. On the other hand, I've started shooting with the iPhone 4 with Hipstamatic software, in additon to the GRD3 and GXR/A12-28mm and 50mm.
