Love the dog - how about a square crop?
It felt too crowded and took away from the perpendicular lines that make up the macro-composition of the photo. But I might be thinking that way because I saw the photo that way in my head before I took it. If I'd had a Hasselblad, I might be agreeing with you without reservation!
Funny how our tools shape our vision, even before we use them.

I think square would let the dog dominate more and give everything a more stable footing while now there is a sort of leakage out of the frame. The dog is the star with his glare and the rest of the stuff just enhances it.
I'm not sure what we use does over influence what we do. I sometimes shoot with square in mind. It is a very special format.

I haven't shot that much in square format- aside from Hipstamatic on my iPhone. Maybe you'd like to show me how you'd crop it? My photos are are Creative Commons, so you can easily download it from Flickr and give it a go. I'm not sure how tight the crop should be for best effect and would love to see what you do.

Just crop equally from each side and see how it looks. Just waving my hands about and covering stuff up it looks OK.
I find square to be a special format that when it works gives an image an extra boost. A lot of abstract stuff can benefit from square. I guess it helps that I used an old Rollei years ago.

You are either very confident in your abilities, or suicidal.

I feel breaking down this to "very confident" or on a death mission is a bit asinine

I think your option is closer.
