Hello folks,

I am new here and considering getting a Canon 7 with 50/1.8 and a Canon P with 50/1.4.

Can anyone suggest reasonable prices for them?

If only choosing one, which one do you prefer? and why?

Thanks!

Meng

The 7 has a nice viewfinder especially if you wear glasses and use 35 mm often. Its exterior design is not as elegant as that of the P (a bit like a brick) and it has no hotshoe what could cause a problwem if you want to use wides like 21 or 28mm.

Prices on the Canon 7 have declined over the past year. $200US is a reasonable price for a 7 in good user condition w/ a working lightmeter, and I have seen them sell for less (mine, for example. 🙁). I'd add another $150 for the Canon 50/1.8 lens.

A Canon P in good user condition runs a little more, but can be had nowadays for $250-300. I'd add another $275 for the 50/1.4 lens.

They are both excellent rfs, very solidly constructed. I agree w/ Spider67's assessment about the vf. If you're going to be shooting primarily 50mm, the P is outstanding. It's a little smaller, and has an accessory shoe for a meter or auxiliary vfs. I had both the 7 and the P; ultimately sold the 7, and kept the P. Nice bright vf, very smooth and quiet. If the P and 50/1.4 you're currently looking at are in good condition, that combination would be my recommendation.
