considering that the price of used m8s have become almost reasonable, one would think that the price of a used rd1 would have sunk somewhat.

but, judging by what folks are asking for them it would seem not.

just a thought...

There are always optimists.

I sold mine for $1500 two years ago. I think you'd have to be deranged to pay that now. I've seen a few listed at more than that but haven't seen them sell. I would prefer one to an M8, but you'd have to be deranged to pay 80% of the Leica price, considering the back-up situation.

Edit For all that it's a lovely camera, well worth $1350 in my book... but as for $1800, as we've seen, why would we?

Those of us who want to buy or have wanted to buy the RD-1 have certainly hoped the price would fall. Those of us who are selling the RD-1 hope the price will stabilize...hhhhmmmm........perhaps is simply an issue of supply and demand!!

I think its correct that since the price of a used M8/u/.2 is unreasonable (IMO) the next choice of a used RD-1/s would be in the cards. But I dont think its a coincidence that the price of the M8s are what they are: Im pretty sure the boys at Leica had this planned out from the beginning: they understand supply and demand and how to market and retain the value of a prestigious product. The M8s are discontinued, so the used market stabilized since the price of the M9 is so high most of us cant afford them........overproduction of the M8 would cause the price to decrease, which hasnt happened.

So the next choice after the M8 for many of us is the RD-1/s. The new RD-1x is apparently $3k plus tax/S&H........so a used RD-1s, even though STILL at the $1200-1500 mark, looks like a pretty decent deal. (And Epson has not overproduced the RD-1, so the value, in terms of S &D, stabilizes at said price above). Personally, I bought a RD-1s a month ago (thanks Steve G) for $1350. I only paid that much b/c it has been CLA-ed by Steves Camera one year prior, the camera was well taken care of.......and well, if I hadnt have bought it, someone else would have!!!!!!! As noted repeated in a recent thread by a gent looking to buy a used RD-1, even though the price hasnt decreased, they sell fast-----> so if you dont act on them soon, they are gone.....even if the camera isnt assuredly in great condition !!!!!!

Having said all this (and sorry for the length, I actually tried to be succinct), I am very happy with this RD-1s, the analog controls and IQ, and am VERY HAPPY I did not buy that used M8 with no or very limited warranty, fiddling around with a bunch of stoopid IR filters, and expenseive repairs. I will stick with my M6, iiif, and RD-1s for now, and am very happy with it!

Having owned both, I'd say the price spread between the RD-1 and M8 is reasonable. I wouldn't be surprised if the spread narrowed, actually. The RD-1 remains a great camera, despite some of the noted risks of ownership.

An R-D1s just went for a smidgen north of $2000! Was looking good until a couple of hours before auction end, but then things just got crazy.

R-D1s on ebay

i love the rd1, no complaints here.
i thought about ( for few seconds) selling them and getting an m8 but 2 for one is a bad deal, even if there was a few bucks left over.

how many rd1s were made? 10,000 sounds like a number i read i read somewhere.
i wonder how many m8s were made before the m9 arrived?

The price of the M8 is at $2,000. Several RD-1 cameras went for ~$1,200 in the classifieds, seemed to be all over the place. I've seen them at a $900 for a low, and at almost the price of the M8 for a high. At $1,200 I weighed one against an M8, but went with the latter. With as many lenses as I adjust the shims on, the wider baselength of the RF was the deciding factor.

Mine (RD1 upgraded firmware) is $1200 CLA'd by Steve Choi bought here just a few months ago. Looks like $ 1000-$1200 is an acceptable pirce for a used RD1. I was just lucky I guess as when the ads here came out I was the 1st to PM the seller (nice seller) and I got the set with a Luigi half case (w/ flap) and strap for $ 150 more.

I paid €1500 for mine 8 months ago. But that was including CV lenses 21/4, 28/1.9, 35/1.4 and 50/2.5. And I'm as happy as peach.

I would not spend that much for a 0.68x cam needing filters and lens coding to work properly let alone its poor performance in high iso. YMMV.

i think the 0.68x can get better with a magnifier (never tried those, but might improve things), coding can be done with a sharpie, but the IR issue and the bad high iso are the main reasons I keep myself from getting one. I miss having 90mm framelines and the M8 felt more natural to handle, though.

The relative high price for used R-D1s suggests that there is an on-going demand for digital RFs. Why dont other camera makers jump on the bandwagon. I'd love a digital RF but cant afford any of the 3 on the market. If digital SLRs can be sold for $600 with a kit lens, then RFs can be sold for not much more, even taking into account higher production cost due to lower volume. It cant be inherently more expensive to make RFs since we used to have tons of cheap film RF cameras.

R-D1 has one cool feature yet. You can really hard push/pull exposure and safely in postprocess. For me -2EV is very good. I really like how R-D1 sensor and sotware does it. I mean RAW files and about own experiences and what I like, of course.

+1 R-D1 file flexibility

When I owned one, I was pleased w/ B&W conversions at iso 800-1600 from RAW files, even when underexposed 1+ stop. Not so in color though, I think.

R-D1 files are all-around nice to process, no doubt. Sorry for veering off-topic a bit.

just a thought...

When I sold my M8 last fall (when the M9 was just released), the plan was to hopefully snag a depreciating RD1... I thought perhaps that prices would come down by around $400, which meant that at roughly $1000 I can get back into dRFs.
Didn't happen though... although it's nice to see that it's holding up quite decently.
