Pricing Thoughts & Market Size 10-2020

Haha, yeah... I agree 100%. Don’t travel with a family one year or buy a gently used car and you can buy a Leica. If you can’t do those things in the first place, then forget the Leica. There’s nothing wrong with using cameras that cost a lot less. There are so many good deals these days that I cannot bring myself to buy a Leica.

And the virus and lockdown are making it easier to save money and get that Camera.

OTOH, I haven't been in a charity shop for well over 6 months and need new clothes and old cameras...

I understand completely. Most everything I spend my $ on has been unavailable to me in a convenient way. I’ve been ordering photo books though... even if they take months to get here. Also, I’m only photographing at night right now and I have the perfect camera for it... and a few that don’t get used enough. So buying more isn’t that exciting. It’s certainly a time to reflect on what you are spending your money on even if you have a lot.

Not sure about Leica and it’s clientele
Whether they really Care to please
Or
just Living on Past Glory
and being somewhat Creative with trying to reinvent that in Digital

Their DLux line is a lesser price, small pkge, small sensor,

Their DLux cameras are very pleasant; mine is coming up to 18 years old and still gets used when megapixels by the ton are not needed for example on ebay and in emails.

Interesting, all I'm buying at present is books but I've made up several crates full of stuff for charity shops that we deliver to the back door; I just wish I'd feel safe going inside the shop. And it's a good time to sort out all the cameras and label all the oddments no one could possibly see as sellable.

Ko, Is it not possible for you to make a point without calling people names?

Calling someone a communist is name calling, but calling out the super rich isn't??

I would disagree that Leica's are only for the super rich. In a capitalist society one buys what one has money allocated for and what one wants. Leica's have always been very expensive.

Dear Deadorff38

Yes Kostya was brought up in Russia
To a certain extent he is tongue in cheek and also
In the blood ... politics of that nature

With all due respect to You
Please leave Ko.fe alone
He is a Good spirit, Good Heart, entertaining fellow
With his Russian/ English ways of speaking

Why single out Ko.fe ??
You not raise question
With Pan and his ‘Stalin’ remark ??
Which I took in good humor too.
they both had a wit in the way they expressed their perspectives...

Mark, there's a difference between a description and a political accusation....
BTW Here's the class distinction question the OP made: "
"Has Leica priced only for the super rich not the middle class or even worker-who-can-save?"

There’s time to donate later... we recently moved and donated furniture, food and baby clothes etc. In Chile, there were organizations willing to pick it up. We took all of the precautions we could and it worked out.

[.....] I put it on ignore list.

I have been using it too for some time. It saves some arguments. Unfortunately written speech can be interpreted very differently to oral speech - body language, mannerisms, a smile; all these can are absent from written speech and even an ironic comment made in good spirit can be misconstrued. I'm afraid that's the nature of the beast.

Going back to the original question, the way I see it is not that much a question of affordability, it is a question of priority. For me, photography is quite low in my list of priorities - mortgage, kids, holidays with family, a car to commute to work is more important. If photography was my trade then yes, I would possibly buy a new digital Leica if I thought it was the right tool for me. But photography is a hobby, something that I do mostly on holidays, if I can get nice pictures with a £62 OM-2n (I know... it was a bargain) then I am automatically out from that client group that Leica is targeting.

A forum is like a round table. We all sit around looking at each other. Either we get along or we don’t. Nevertheless, we still face each other or we leave the table. We can ignore many things - things we don’t want to hear, things we don’t want to see, things we don’t agree with. But, can we really, completely ignore each other and carry on like all is fine and dandy?

The internet makes us all travelers in the same boat. It’s not a pretty boat. We either let it sink or we keep it afloat. Easy to let it sink, much harder to keep it up. It takes teamwork to keep it going, understanding, some sacrifice and sometimes eating crow to preserve the harmony of the forum. It’s not a one way street. We all need to be tolerant of each other's opinions. Calling out bad behavior is good but should be done with respect.

Two way street, mutual respect, sink or swim… it’s not easy but it’s that or we’re not a community.

Perhaps I’m full of you know what, maybe even full of myself. One thing I do know is that I value being a member of this community and I’ll swallow a little pride to help keep things going; I think RFF is well worth it. How about you?

All the best,
Mike

We should form a club to preserve them and our sanity...

What I like about my old one is that the battery charger has an extra socket at the back and a special lead so that it acts as an AC adapter and I can run the camera off the mains without using the battery. A great idea others should follow.
