An HP 6500A Multifunction scanner/printer/copy machine continues to do a good job for me. Also my antique Epson 2450 continues to do an excellent job at higher resolution, both prints and negatives. Neither were particularly expensive new, and could be found used in good shape at very low cost.
The Image Capture app included with macOS High Sierra drives both of them well for casual scanning, or I switch to VueScan for much more specific scanning control.
My Epson 1680 (circa 2001) is still supported by Epson and is still a fine print scanner. This just goes to show that there are plenty of good choices out there.
