Publicity Article on Zeiss Ikon / Cosina

I bet they would feel better about this cooperation if the products were delivered on a more timely basis.

I am confident though that the lenses and camera will be worth the wait.

Interesting that "Chapter II" comes before "Chapter I" on the page. 😉 How are we to read those runes? 🙄 Hope the lenses are good - whenever they get here...

LOL some of the prices are ridiculous. Those prices Todd linked to at Sam Shoshan are list. I have read that the street prices will be "competitive" whatever that means. 🙄

Actualy the lenses are significantly cheaper than their Leica counterparts. And compared to other Zeiss lenses they are a real steal 🙂
My dream outfit with a 35/2 would look like this
ZI body 1617
ZI 35/2 1042
shade 127
total 2786

And from the competition
M7 body 2895
cron 35/2 1695
shade 85
total 4675

So I save $1889 and get Zeiss glass 🙂

Actually I was reading between the lines of the press statement and noticed scant mention of their business relationship with Kyocera.

Hopefully in regards to the price, there is always the hope that the price will come down two years after the introduction. I don't think this will be another flash in the pan like the Rollei 35 RF. I believe Zeiss want to sell some glass.

Actualy the Rollei 35RF was nothing else than a Bessa R2. The Zeiss Ikon seems to share less parts with the Bessa, I.E. the different Rangefinder and framelines selected by the lens used with manual override, and may be build from different materials.

I'm pretty sure that the lenses are different from Cosinas lineup.

If the system is better or not, or even worth the price, is not mine to judge 🙂

Very true 😎

It is all very interesting with the rumors about Leica having financial trouble. This can't make Leica feel warm and fuzzy. Frankly $2700 or $4600 for a limited set-up is like a Porsche versus a Bently, I can't afford either.

I think they have an interesting price point and a nice looking product, but how much are used M6 and M7 models going for?

I hope Zeiss luck with this, or else this may be the last high performance 35mm film body introduced, unless Nikon makes an F7.

If not, I hope Cosina rebadges it as an R4 and sells it a bit south of a Grand.

I wish Zeiss luck with this, though I have my doubts. It is not hard to get a used Leica for less than half of what the Zeiss Ikon will cost. The Leica has better build quality and has a proved track record of being servicable for 50+ years. I predict Zeiss will (have to) offer a digital body in the not so far future to make it take off. Otherwise the competition from Bessas and used Leicas will prove too strong.

The lenses are more interesting, but they are not that cheap (depends what you compare to) and they are all medium speed and somewhat heavy.

Having said that, I think it is an intereting camera and would not mind having it. But I will not bite since I have what I need. If I started out from scratch, I would still get used Leicas and perhaps a couple Zeiss lenses (now that the M-Hexanons are so hard to get).
