Hello Friends,
I received a Canonet QL17 GIII in good working condition, except for the fact that the shutter only fires when the camera body is right-side up (as if you're shooting normally towards the horizon) The shutter does not fire when the camera lens is aimed up, down, or even when the camera is flipped upside down.
At first I thought it's the infamous stuck shutter problem, so I took out the front element and cleaned the shutter blades with Ronsonol lighter fluid (like I've done with a few other Canonets). The blades are nice and snappy now when the shutter DOES fire, but when I point the camera up to the ceiling, jiggle the body it a little bit, then try to shoot, I get nothing. Pointing the camera back upright with a little jiggle, it goes back to shooting fine. :bang:
There's an audible click when I press on down on the shutter, but it sounds not as 'robust' as the click I hear when the shutter does fire. Everything else about the camera seems fine to me. I took off the front cap to inspect the winding mechanism and it looks okay. I suspect some part deeper in the lens/body is not fully in position.
Do you have any suggestions before I dreadingly pull back the leatherette and dissect the camera?
Thank you!
