A lady on ebay asked if my vintage nikon bayonet-mount lens would fit on her son's digital camera, a Nikon D80...

A knowledgeable dealer said it might fit but would probably not work properly...

In general, do old Nikon, Canon, Minolta, etc., lenses fit on modern digitals of the same manufacturer?

thanks in advance, bob

Bob, the Nikkor depending on its age will mostly like mount to the D80, but the camera will not meter properly.

The camera will have to be use in the manual mode.

Canon will not accept old FD canon lenses (ok, not completely true, but for all practical purposes), but will accept (with adapters) a great many other mounts. I use M42, Pentax K, Nikon and Contax lenses on my old 300D.
Aperture priority metering works, but of course you have to manually stop down.
Believe it or not, a discussion forum exists for manual lenses...about 1600 members.

thank you all for the almost instantaneous replies...regards, bob

Pre-AI lenses may not fit on a D80 without modification ... it says in the user manual to stay away from Non-AI lenses

That being said (as stated) D80 cannot meter with AI or AIS lenses, but they will fit on the camera with no modification
