hi, there appears to be some rusts on the aperature blade of my elmarit 90. can it be clean? and does it need to be clean? i'd appreciate any suggestion. thanks

Yes it can be cleaned up. But I would caution not to do it your self unless you really know what you are doing. If it is all working well for you and the amount of rust is not effecting the ability of the lens to freely adjust the appature then I would just leave it alone. But if it bothers you that it is there im sure you could send it out and have it removed.

Agree with Rprice. If its not causing a problem- i.e.- making it somewhat difficult to set different apertures- leave it alone. It probably developed over a 30 year span so its not going to suddenly stop you from taking pictures overnight. That said, if its really bad, an aperture leaf _could_ break. It would be more problematic on an SLR lens that has to auto open and close to the taking aperture in a flash, but with an RF you set the aperture and shoot. If there's nothing felt impeding your setting of the aperture (friction)then don't worry, be happy! A lens CLA is $75 and up if it really bothers you or it gets noticably worse.

What the others said. The Elmarit is for a rangefinder camera so there's no worry about the rust affecting the stop down mechanism in a single lens reflex lens. A lot of older lenses exhibit a bit of rust on the blades.

[rant]There is some rust on your spelling too, I think 😀 it is actually "aperture", and this is one of the most common misspelling of photographic terms on the various fora, so common that even magazines do that sometimes - I think knowing & using the proper spelling for the terms we use everyday for our jobs or passions would be a good thing to do, maybe even more important than de-rusting some aperture blades... 😀[/rant]

Sorry about the rant! About the OP's original questions, answers have already been provided to which I wouldn't be able to add anything out of my limited lens-de-rusting knowledge. 😀

It can be cleaned. Should it? Depends on the severity. It can cause the diaphragm blades to jam, but that would be a pretty severe rust problem.
