questions before get the VM 21mm/f4 Pancake

I hate to correct you, Tom, but the LTM version that I had worked fine with hood and B+W filter. Much like my other color skopars (35 and 28). Maybe the filter you tried ?

Newfinder, for some reason the vignetting is much more prominent on digital cameras. When you use film it is barely noticeable, in my experience. The LH-1 hood is good but big, and I found in practice one rarely needs it. Also, the lens only comes multi-coated.

Best,

Roland.

Roland, great input, I chose B+W 39mm UV as well:D
And you are right, I made a mistake on the 'SC version 21mmf4' in the lenses list, it's not for 'single coated':)

Roland, it is quite possible that your filters and hood worked fine. I was (and am) using Leica 39mm filters and they do have a thick ring on them. I have way too many of these to change. When I use filters I simply remove the hood and stick the filter on. Occasionally I have gotten a bit of flare - but not often enough to start chasing thin rim filters.

Right, in fact the original 21mm lens hood is a tiny little hood, I think a 'thick filter' could do 80% of the hood's job:D

guys, just got the 21f4 with L39->M mount hood, and the viewfinder.

The lens is perfectly sized, this is the kind of RF feeling I want. But I still have to say my too big 35f1.2 does provide faster focusing speed and more stable hand holding!

And it is bad to find the viewfinder's plastic bottom has 3 cracks! The dealer has asked it back to get another new one for me, it is the first 'broken VF' in that official dealer shop in 6 years! I must buy some lottery today~~~:D

Filters come in all kind of outer ring thickness/height...mostly depending on whether the glass was glued on or a screw-in retaining used.

For very wide angle lenses, a simple trick is to knock out the glass and use the outer ring itself as a hood. Thicker outer ring is easily obtained by using +7 or +10 close-up lenses.

[eBay is full of sellers of such things, in chrome or black, some make better finished than others. Metal finishing quality is best in name brands such as Hoya...all cheap enough. Type in filter size such as 39mm and search and you will be amased.]

[Use caution: place the filter inside a thick plastic bag before hitting the glass with a knock'ometer...er, hammer.:D]

You know, I might add a UV glass onto the original hood to have the same result:angel:
