Hi there

I have some questions about the Jupiter-9 85/2 lens (in LTM, but I guess this doesn't make a difference):

  • Does the front part/aperture ring turn with when the lens is focused (like with the LTM 85/2 Nikkor or 135/3.5 Canon)?

  • From Jupiter-3's (50/1.5) I know, newer black ones have more troubles with focus accuracy and quality control in general, than the older chrome ones. Is this the same for the Jupiter-9? I mean more lemons with black ones than with chrome?

Your answers will be very appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi,
The aperture ring stays fixed on the J9. As far as the focus accuraccy is concerned, the J9 suffers is the same way as the J3. Of the 15 or so J9's I have done, at least 3/4 needed some adjustment. There doesn't seem to be the same correlation between the silver and black ones. However, the construction of both types is basically similar unlike the J3. It is also probably true to say that the J9 is much easier to adjust. There is a lot more in the way of shims. I have yet to find a J9 that I couldn't get to focus correctly unlike the J3's. The only minor consideration is that you may need to thin a very small amount of metal off the aperture ring if the lens group needs to move substantially, but this is relatively easy.

there may be a well sorted on the classified's soon. 😉

Hey,

The front element doesn't rotate. Them German and Russian technicians knew out to make a good lens. It is however a very complicated lens, so many are out of focus. I have a silver one dating from 1957 and all seems to be well with it. I have shot at f/2 close up and the focus seems spot on. My advise is to buy chrome, old and from reputable buyers.

Hi

My J9 is chrome and from 1968. It was stiff so I had to relube, the focus was spot on 🙂

Kim: btw. have you already had time to check out my J3? I'm curious if you've found the "bug" 🙂
thanks in advance 🙂

Hi Didier, my J9 is so good I sold my TE.
Mine is form '59 (IIRC) and needed no adjustments for focussing properly. Focus was terribly stiff, but a relube did wonders. Not 100% but enough. It is not as fast focussing as the TE, you can't have them all. The focus throw is quite big which is useful for precise focussing.
I got a screw hood from Heavystar, about 4cm. deep. Seems like a lot but no vignetting!

There is something special about Sonnars...

These J-9's are going to become more valuable, I expect. I don't really understand the supposed focus problem with Russian LTM lenses, but whatever it is, Oleg fixed it for mine. It's a very useful lens.

I expect that one purchasing a J-9 should simply count on paying for a servicing and adjustment--and consider it money very well spent.

I got a newish late black J-9 in LTM that was bought less than a year of its manufacture date, but it is totally useless as the focus is way off.
