Hi guys,
Since you've been super helpfull sofar, I'll ask you for advice on Firmaware updates.
I'm thinking of updating the Firmware. I don't now my current version, can I find out somehow?
The newest is the V2.0, right?
Is there any problems know when updating? Or can I just go ahead and update?
Thanks!

In the menu go to Settings>Basic Setup>LCD Brightness. Under the lcd brightness level bar it wil say R-D1 Ver. 2.0 if you have the latest firmware installed, which basically makes the camera an R-D1S. If under the lcd brightness bar there is nothing then you have the original firmware. Go for it if you don't have V2. I know of no problems, only benefits, such as raw+jpeg shooting.

The only downside I know of is that battery life will seem somewhat shorter. We've never been able to determine for sure whether the v2.0 firmware actually consumes more battery power, or is just more conservative about deciding when the battery is too low to operate the camera.
I do know that when running the v1.x firmware I experienced several low-battery situations in which the shutter would continue to click but no file would be written to the memory card. In one case I lost about 10 shots this way. With the v2.0 firmware, this has not happened. So my theory is that v2 is shutting down the camera before the battery level drops low enough for this problem to occur.

One good thing I noticed was that I was able to calibrate the Battery meter properly, with the old firmware it got just short of being exactly right.
Speaking of the meter gauges, how COOL aren't they? And in my opinion the best system I've ever seen to give you fast info.

Absolutely! I used to feel like that over the compact Nikon film camera that had a 28mm lens and dials - well, now I've got something even more coolbayerische said:One good thing I noticed was that I was able to calibrate the Battery meter properly, with the old firmware it got just short of being exactly right.

Downside; the guy who owned the compact Nikon used to be my assistant, now lives in NYNY and makes $30k a day (!) shooting fashion
So I'm still jealous...

I wish you hadn't mentioned Madonna. Now I can't stop singing her ode to rangefinder photography, "Leica Virgin".
