R-D1 refurbs back on Epson site

Wow! The number of R-D1 owners here on RFF is going thru the roof! :p
Just out of curiosity, has anyone had R-D1(s) with serial numbers over 5000? I seem to remember the original run was going to be 10,000 - does anyone know if that limit was ever reached? And do the s/n on the R-D1s continue on from where the R-D1 left off?

On another tack, those refurbs on the US Epson site - they're not available here in UK are they? Seems like a real bargain to me - shame I can't get a second body for that price

My R-D1s, bought new a couple of months ago, has a s/n of 12**, so I guess not.

Ordered a refurb yesterday. (my third R-D1). No emails from Epson yesterday.

Just now (10:45am EST Friday) got a confirmation call from Epson security verifying my credit card info. He said they had about 100 R-D1's yesterday which sold out in hours.

Everything A-OK, discount code honored and camera is shipping today. Confirmation email just arrived.

Hmmmm mine says "Order is under review" but I should go check email. There is a pending charge against my card, but it is for a bit more than the Epson amount.

I just got a call from "Epson security" to verify my refurb order and then received an order verification email about 10 minutes later. The camera will ship today apparently.

Joe, check your voicemail. That's what we had to do.

Thanks Aaron.

I actually just called Epson Customer Service as I recalled giving my cell number rather than my home number and yes indeed that was the problem!

A nice gent named Michael walked over to Accounting and they added the correct phone number to the order which was still in the queue for confirmation with the bank.

So I should be good. Now, about LENSES!?!?!

BTW, where in NYC are you? I'm on the UWS.

Woo-Hoo!

"Order is being Fulfilled"

B&H here I come! ;-)

And I changed my Avatar! (with thanks to Sean Reid.)

Hey Joe

Hey Joe

What kind of watch is that?

What kind of accessories does one need for a refurb RD1? I'm guessing spare batteries and such, but maybe not IR filters for all lenses?? :D

Boo Hoo

My order got canceled for some obscure reason that neither Epson nor my bank can explain. And they still have a hold on funds in my account. Very strange. Oh well, eBay here I come.

Regards,
Ira

Refurb RD1s seem to be a USA thing, we have to make do with end of line new ones here in the UK ;-) .. I was lucky and got mine from Calumet who were clearing out and I found Jono his a day later :) ..

Welcome to the R-D1 Joe - mine is in Paris having the RF calibrated (wish me luck) I`m using a Loaner cam now (more than Leica offer when the M8s go back for the service recall) and it`s bang on ....... as for lenses, have a look at my list at the bottom, the fast CV lenses suffer almost Zero Vignetting and are excellent value, it`s only the slow stuff (apart from the 90mm) whjch Vig on the RD1

That sucks. Sorry to hear it. They may have oversold their refurb stock.

Thanks Adam. I am really looking forward to this cam especially after seeing some of the high ISO comparisons.

I recall reading on DPReview that Jono got a terrific deal on his as a new closeout so I'm glad to know you had a hand in that. Did you get the R-D1s or the R-D1? I haven't seen ANY R-D1s's in the States at all.

The R-D 1s was never sold in the US at all -- it was just a different model designation for specific international markets, where Epson figured that a new model name might make it easier to move the merchandise.

No great loss for US buyers, though, because the R-D 1s is simply an R-D 1 with the firmware upgrade and a different name silkscreened on! (The RFF R-D 1 brain trust determined this after extensive investigation.)

So, if your R-D 1 doesn't have the new firmware, all you need to do is download and install it, and in effect you've just made your camera into an R-D 1s!

Jono has one? I didn't know that (or just forgot ... as usual) ... I'll have to check out his site. Good photographer and genuinely nice guy.

Yeah Trius, Jono got it before the M8 arrival, the M8 of course being the "new kid on the block" is getting all his attention but when he has to shoot something which the M8 won`t like he can use the RD1 :)

Thankfully an R-D1 (hence the closeout) as all raw converters work (the "S" flag in the EXIF Data in the R-D1S stops RSE and maybe even C1 in its tracks) and it has the prominent screw for vertical alignment :)

Some Samples

The Russian lenses are fine stopped down, in fact good examples are fine wide open once you take into account that they usually heavily front focus on true leica mount bodies like the RD1 ......
The CVs are exceptional value, look for used ones being sold by the M8 brigade
