R-D1 refurbs back on Epson site

I'm sure the 47% price cut didn't hurt, either!

Indeed, but I also think that had Leica used less questionable "design features" in their M8, more people would have been prepared to pay the extra cash for an M8, at the end of the day, given Epson support, buying an R-D1 is a bit of a lottery, while I am sure that Leica quality control is much better.

I am happy with my R-D1, but it is the second replacement, the first one was actually perfect, almost no dead pixels and RF spot on, but the shutter died after less than 200 pictures, while the second one had the RF way off.

When I first looked thought the VF, it seemed to me that the bright lines for the various FLs were just way off, but after mounting a lens, everything seems fine. Looks great, feels great. SO nice to hold a rangefinder again after nearly 20 years without!

In terms of focusing what am I looking for and how best to test it? Thanks.

The camera itself lacks the swell-elegant packaging that it originally had and came in a simple white box with foam inserts.

Oh yeah, does anyone have a lead on accessories for this thing? Ever-ready case? Extra batteries?

Joe, Luigi's full leather case for the R-D1 is simply amazing.

Luigi's site is down at the moment. Nice kitty, Aaron. Didn't realize there were generic equivalent batteries for the R-D1. B&H had NOTHING.

I'll check the camera out in daylight.

BTW, anyone do the Firmware install yet? I seem to have one hot/stuck pixel so the remapping thing would be good for me. Just waiting for the battery to charge up.

Aaron, ket me know when you are in the mood for Starbucks and I'll meet you there (or wherever) and we can compare cameras.

Christmas is early for me!!!!

Well folks... I won't be sure until I get this baby out for a spin in daylight but the camera is impressive. Condition wise.... its mint... I couldn't tell that it was used. There is not one mark on it. It looks like I lucked out so far. Took a few shots around my desk and they look pretty good.

It was tough getting through the last few hours of work knowing the box was waiting for me at home...

BTW.. mine came with the old version of firmware. I'll load the latest as soon as I fully charge the battery.

Just about everybody has the same reaction. The framelines move diagonally to compensate for parallax, and when there's no lens on the camera, they move all the way to the full-closeup position. Looks really wacky until you get used to it.

I seem to recall CameraQuest having a case they said would work, but am not positive. I'm sure Stephen would be happy to advise.

Last time I checked, late last week, the Epson Store still had the skookum R-D 1 batteries in stock, so I ordered one. Just about everyone seems to concur that these give considerably more shots per charge than third-party batteries, so it's probably worth the price (about fifty bucks) to get at least one as a spare.

I've had pretty good luck with the "Emerging Power" brand batteries I bought, but they don't last nearly as long as the Epsons so I normally start out with the Epson battery in the camera and then switch to the third-party ones. Once I have my second Epson battery, I expect I'll use the third-party batteries only as backups.

Some people also have reported that the camera will hang when using some third-party batteries, and someone who had that experience and checked with Epson posted here that he was told it's important to use the Epson battery. My guess is that some (but not all) third-party batteries may have the correct voltage and total mAh ratings, but don't produce enough instantaneous current to get the camera all the way through its firing cycle. If you have a third-party battery that causes the camera to hang up even once, I'd suggest throwing it away and getting either a real Epson battery or at least a different third-party brand.

50 Noctilux shot at f2. Yes... It produces some really pleasant bokeh doesn't it? Can't wait to get the opportunity to shoot with the r-d1 + noctilux. Don't have a cat or pet to shoot like endustry does... Man.. I really don't feel like heading into work today. :) However... I did wake up 10 mins before the alarm and loaded the new firmware. Big difference. :D

Hi Joe,
check Calumet for Batteries, Robert White has them as well. I always carry three with me. They don't last that long. I did the firmware update, its very easy. Just download the files with the instructions..
Happy shooting!!
