I just got my first R-D1s (first rangefinder, other than an Olympus XA) and I can already tell I'm going to love it.
After reading lots of threads about quality control issues, I thought I'd ask about something minor that's been bugging me a bit: When I throw the lever to cock the shutter, it resists slightly at the very beginning, and then sort clicks/releases to allow a smooth stroke. Is this normal, or should the action be light and effortless from the start of the stroke?

I think it's normal. Mine behaves the same way. I guess it's a part of RD-1s' characters. I usually leave it sticking out and push it back in when I'm done shooting. Enjoy!!
