Hi,

I'm new to the rangefinder world. I started playing with an old Yashica EE 1.7 few months ago. I think it was a good introduction to the world of RF cameras, but it doesn't quite satisfy my needs. It's not quite the feel of the 1V.

I've been looking the possibilities for a while and I think I'll go for a R2 with a 35mm lens. I was wondering which camera had the quieter shutter, the mechanical one (R2m) or the electronic (R2a)?

Thanks,

Julien, probably no RF will feel like 1V. But I think that's why we use rangefinders afterall 🙂

I can't comment which has quieter shutter, but they both wil be MUCH LOUDER than the Yashica. If you're looking for something quieter or at least as quiet as the Yashica than Bessa is not the way to go...

However if you want some user friendly camera with interchangable lenses and bright VF then Bessa is a fine camera...

Well, I was referring to the build quality. I don't expect a RF to have the same feel in hand has the 1V-HS! Anyway, is the R2a/m quieter than a 10D or a normal SLR? What would be an alternative (M mount) for a quiet RF?

The R2 will be quieter than an SLR since there is no mirror to move up and down.

However a cloth shutter, such as on a Leica M, will be quieter than the metal shutter, such as on a Voigtlander or Zeiss.

Jon has it right - pretty much any RF will be more quiet than pretty much any SLR. Just because of mirror slap. My OM-4T is particularly quiet by SLR standards, but it is an SLR so the whole shutter-trip-sequence is louder than any RF. My experience is that my Konica Hexar RF is supposed to be loud by RF standards but is seldom noticed. My Leica M3 is more quiet - but I can't say it is noticed less frequently, simply because even my "loud" Hexar RF is so quiet that it is seldom noticed at all and the M3, in practical terms, does no better.

I don't understand all this concern over how quiet the shutter of camera "A" is compared to camera "B". They all make some noise & unless the ambient sound level is very, very low; I doubt that it'll be noticed by anyone other than the photographer.

my bessa r2a might just be almost as loud as my canon ae1, its a hell of a lot louder then my old canon 30v which had a lower pitch shutter sound. The bessa is a nice metal clack! Its the first thing everyone comments on...that said I would only trade that camera for a m7

I was concerned at first as well. I shoot with the Canon 1n, but when I got my R2A I was as happy as a clam. I got a lot of shots I normally couldn't get. People see the big black beast and move out of the way or stare. No mirror slap or auto film advance and quite film rewind lets me shoot in churches or shrines/temples.
With the Bessa they take no notice. Also now I have a quality travel camera that takes up an 1/4th of the space.
It also got rid of my lazyness that i seemed to pick up from zoom lenses.

Bessa's are great little cameras.....

Hallo Julien,

I have both of them.

There is not much in the shutter noise difference, I wouldn't choose one over the other on this. Talking of the shutter, I can feel less "recoil" in the R2M when using high-speeds (>1/500). But I've never seen this show up in any photos.

If it means anything, I prefer the R2a.

Hi Julien,
I have the Bessa T with the same Copal shutter as the other Bessa
mechanical cameras. A half-case really dampens the shutter sound.
Ruben and I ran tests with and without the case. Try it ;-)
Cheers, mike
