R3A Shutter Problem?

I've had a few of these on previous rolls from my R3A.
The problem seems entirely random with 33 frames just fine and 3 frames bad.
Diagnosis?

I know this probably sounds too obvious but are you sure its not the film? light getting in the felt. failing that, are you changing lenses at all mid or part roll. doesn't look like a shutter problem as the lines and effect is vertical and I would have thought with a vertically travelling shutter would be horizontal if that where the case. just a few thoughts.

Looking at the negs...it looks like I did a lens change shortly before the problem.
Lens change...good frame...then 3 bad frames in a row.

Shouldn't the thing be light tight for lens changes?

You know Steve, the first shot looked kind of familiar to me - when I got the finger in the frame using my 28mm Color Skopar. The second is different though ...

I'm pretty sure even I can keep my thumb out of a 50mm fov.
It's some sort of light leak.

This camera is used, but under warranty from cameraquest. Perhaps I should send these pics to Mr. Gandy and see what he thinks.

It looked wider than that and you have a 21 in your signature. Sorry.

PS: check the foam around the film speed window. It's weird that it's vertical, so likely not the shutter ...

I'll give it a once over. Odd that it only affected a few frames and those were taken in the shade.

I've experienced this same problem with my R3A, and with the very first roll in my R3M, which has replaced the R3A as of four days ago.

I did no lens changing, either. The flaws occurred randomly within the first five (or less) frames of the roll... and they do look similar to those of your own.


EDIT: The sample below is the third negative... the other streak (which looks much less like a lightleak, and more of a straight streak) appears on the first negative.

Look at the rebates on the negatives, it looks like the leak is from the front of the film (e.g. through the shutter) or into the take up area, from the colour.

I have not had the bottom plate off of my r3a, but on the R and T there is a little bit of foam near the battery compartment that must be in place for light not to sneak in between the battery compartment and a cavity that is not isolated from the film.

Hmm... I am still regularly experiencing a similar problem to that of the original poster.

I get similar looking "leaks" on every roll of film, but the problem does not occur past the 4th or 5th negative. It seems like the first couple of shots are always prone to having a big streak right down the middle, or side.

This problem happened on my R3A (no longer have it), and on my current R3M.

Did you get the "ever ready" case with it? When I ordered my R3A from Stephen nearly a year ago, I got the new old stock ever ready case and always leave the bottom half on to help absorb oil and sweat from my greasy hands. I wonder if having that case on the bottom would help at all????
