Great shots, Dave!
Thanks for posting.
Where were these taken? Queens?
Good to see you on RFF for a change.
Beware the appeal of LF!

The flash at night give these a "weegee-esque" feel...

thanks.....i overdeveloped these a bit to get a more gritty feel to them and to bring in some more grain.
The flash is so much fun! I am on the terminal search for a hi power, smallish flash around guide # 200. The nikon i used is about GN 140. Most of these were shot at f8 with flash on stun

Two more Weegee-esque corkers. Who says Leica M & flash is a mismatch?

Nice tilt to add that dynamic, the bald dude looking over, the two women holding hands, suit walking away but not as lit up so it doesn't draw too much attention.... just find the half-man in the back a little distracting. nice one.

Cool shots. Just wondering what kind of reactions you got after the flash in the dark?

I'll give you hint... Altcruiser is built like a NFL Nose Tackle. Most of those NY'ers said, "Thank you sir".

I did get some crap but I actually can move pretty quick and I am fast with the camera. With most of the shots I had the camera back down a bit before they even thougth to look at who blasted them. I just kept moving
I did get a lot of inspiration form Bruce Gilden but I am not quite that abrasive.
One girl gave me a rash of crap during the day...i dished it out right back...told her if she does not want her picture taken she should not be out in public

Great series, thanks!
(I was gonna say Weegee-ish, but somebody beat me to it.)

Thanks...
I wanted to comment on a post that seems to have dissappeared from Ben in NYC.... to say the least he was not impressed with the photos I posted.....good for him and I mean that. The idea here is to post things that we wish to recieve feedback on. Of course we all want great feedback but that is just not always the case; at times photos suck or people just dont like them; not a thing in the world wrong with that.
I do have issue when people just say "that sucks" while giving no reason for their opinion. I try to follow those guidelines as do many others.
I like taking pictures but my ego is not tied to my pictures nor do i brag about my pictures. Like them or not all that really matters is that I either like them or learn from them; part of that learning process is to post them and get honest feedback.
Part of the idea was to use the flash to isolate couples and groups. NYC is so very BIG and there is so much going on that I wanted to try and grab smaller pieces. When it started raining I decided to over develop these a bit to enhance the gritty feel. If i made this part of the village look dirty and nasty then I am happy wth that part of the result.

The one of the woman stepping out of the cab would be OK as a single, given some cropping. The background is messy as it stands, but the subject sort of works. The rest of of these look way too bright in the highlights, though. I'd seriously consider reducing your flash a little. They also don't really say much as a set and there's no sense of emotion anywhere at all.
