The attached crop is from an M8 picture (ISO 160, F5.6, 1/250 - Summicron 35MM F2 ASPH) I shot with no filter. Is this a lens thing or does the sensor help cause this?

Wow, fascinating! What is the whole picture like? Where in the whole picture is this? corner? There is some kind of red reflex or linear halo in the top left. I can't imagine this coming from a lens.
Is this the only occurance?
Was this against strong light? Could it be that a hood wasn't completely straight with the lens?
It looks like prismatic breaking of light. Don't know the proper term in english. But where is the prism?

Whole picture attached (downsized). I was shooting directly into the sun and I was trying to keep the camera out of the direct sun. This is much easier with a SLR camera.

How did you try to keep the camera out of the direct sun? With something that could cause this prismatic colour breaking?
You can see a distinct shade edge at about 1/5th of the height of the pic. Only at the top part. Shaded by a hood? Then the prismatic colours start. FIrst a deep red, then through yellow to blue. In between there is another sharp shade in the red zone. Too sharp for a strap, but what else?
What hood did you use? Because of the crop factor you should be able to use a tighter hood with the M8.

fascinating...

I was shooting almost directly into the sun. I just tried to use the shadow of a tree to shade the camera. With the viewfinder offset slightly from the lens, I could not be quite sure that the sun would not shine into the lens. The hood used is the standard Leica rectangular hood for that lens.

I don't know what caused the phenomenon, but if there's a pot of gold at the end of that rainbow you could get a second M8 :D
