I know how to adjust the RF on my Leica III and IIIf, but can anyone tell me how to adjust the rangefinder on my M2?

Many thanks in anticipation of your learned responses.

Ted.

Vertical: take of the cover screw between the windows, use a tiny screw-driver to access a screw underneath.

Horizontal: twist the RF cam roller with a big, possibly bent screw driver.

Best,

Roland.

There are 2 adjustments on the horizontal rangefinder, the roller has an eccentric screw and turning this adjusts the infinity. To adjust the 1m is very fiddly involving turning another eccentric, this time on the pivot of the rangefinder arm. Access to this is reasonably straightforward, take off the bottom plate. There is a cover fixed with (from memory) 4 small screws, remove this and the grommet you can see in the lens throat and you can now put a jewellers screwdriver down the hole to adjust the rangefinder without taking anything else to bits. Sequence is - adjust infinity, adjust 1m, recheck infinity, readjust, recheck 1m, continue till either frustrated or satisfied. There is also an eccentric on the stop post for the rangefinder arm and if needing amusement you can twiddle that as well.

Vertical is as above, the screw by the rangefinder window is a very short grub screw and will fall out before you expect it to and there is a slot for a small screwdriver underneath to set the vertical adjustment.

Learn from my mistakes and do your dismantling of the camera over a tray to catch the bits.

Andrew, how exactly does one "adjust 1m" and "recheck 1m"? Ground glass on film rails or marking on lens? For infinity I use the moon or a bright star. My M2's R/F is still not quite right: I'm getting a shade less depth of field behind the plane of focus than in front of it.
