Expensive rangefinders ? Well you are talking about a special brand here, I guess. This brand has proven (handmade !!!) quality and there is a good chance that your camera will still function the same in 100 years. Also the lenses that mount to this cameras are usually at the top end of quality. Some of the best photographers, especially in journalism, used (and some still use) this cameras and lenses. There must be something about it. So why not, spend a big amount of money into something that you will have the rest of your life and that will give you a lot of joy in that time ?
You are exited about your new toy, that makes your life easier in some ways. You will have your results way faster. Maybe you take much more photos and at the end it makes you a better photographer, because you are able to see the result just after taking the picture. All OK. But still, the M4 must be very good camera, I wish I had one. I am wondering why you did not decide to get a M8 or RD-1, if you already own the glass. What is "bad" on a RF, except it makes less sense, compared to SLR camera, to use them for tele- and macro- photographie?
Your work sounds pretty interesting to me btw. If I would be you, I would be happy that I found my way to DSLR cameras, BUT still keep the M4 "in my bag", loaded with a BW film for special situations or for the fun to take some photos on the weekend.
I can imagine that you will use your M4 again, or you will regret it one day, when it is sold. Think about it twice.

Hi JCdeR,
In my opinion it is not about SLRs men or RF men at all. It is not even about RFs or SLRs, which is better and so forth.
It is about c h a n g e. People change. The world changes. Camera Industry changes. You have changed too. That's all, that simple.
Today it may appear to you that you was just narrow minded for 20 years of Leica, but I bet you were not. Leica had and has certain features that you considered as basic for you.
You have had your experience, your surrounding circumstances, etc etc and you have evolutioned. You are normal, you are Ok.
Some of us, like me, evolutioned in the opposite direction. Our priorities changed, or we discovered like you that we can achieve our goals with the RF instrument rather than with the SLR. We are normal too.
It is not at all about what people can find in RFs. It is more about what you have not found or don't find any more, like a divorced person asking himself who could possibly love my ex-partner. You happened to, and others may find there what you did for some time, and/or what you never did. Because we are all different for being humans, and we all change for the same reason.
Cheers,
Ruben

I liken it to the difference between driving a luxury car with fully automatic everything and driving an older classic car with a five-speed, no air and no power anything.
Both get you from A to B but the rides are totally different and can be equally satisfying in their own way.

Ruben brought up a couple of good points.
It may be hard to believe but your ex-wife is making another man very happy, and the idea of devolution, where progress is a change to a more primative form: dslr -> RF
JC, so are you going to list that crappy/inferior M4 for sale here in the classifieds?

Hi ZeissFan,
Since this thread is "Off Topic", let me go off furthermore. With great simplicity you bring me again to a phylosophical thought that assaults me once or twice a year, by which life is not about what, but about how.
Here around is 2 AM...
Cheers,

Life is about.... ah yes thanks FrankS, woman. I heard stories about a man being exited about a new one, and later found out that the one he had for 20 years was way better for him.
But every man is different again.
