According to Erwin Puts (http://tinyurl.com/2v7p7b7)

The decision to design and build the M8 was made in 2004. One of the triggers to start the project was the surprisingly positive acceptance of the Epson RD-1, a digital camera wit a quirky design, based on the Cosina Bessa chassis. The image quality was rather mediocre.

Pity that i'm such a rather mediocre writer otherwise i would write a blog about some rather mediocre reviewer.

I wonder what a a digital camera wit[/] is? With all the problems I have heard about the M8 and M9, Leica must be hilarious.

Well then, that fits: I´m a mediocre photographer evidently with a mediocre camera. A match made in heaven. Rather like all those with fantastic P+S, bridge or hybrid cameras, making fantastically dull photos most of them, as they´ve no idea how to use the camera in other than full auto. (not including those frequenting this site of course 😉 )

Puts is not a photographer...

Puts is not a photographer...

...he is a camera and lens "tester", who measures and compares sharpness, resolution, contrast, distortion, flare, etc., but I have never seen even one great photograph published by Mr. Puts, whether shot with an "inferior" Epson R-D1 or the "far superior" M9.

A quote from Bill Pierce:

"Never ever confuse sharp with good, or you will end up shaving with an ice cream cone and licking a razor blade."

The image quality was
rather mediocre and Leica reasoned that they could easily up the ante.
(emphasis is mine)

This is one sentence in a 39-page history of Leitz. The quoted sentence states that the existence of the R-D1 motivated Leica to develop the M8.

If you object to Put's assessment that the R-D1 offered a rather mediocre IQ, you can name the criteria by which you want IQ assessed and then compare the R-D1 with the M8.

Well, reading more than this one-liner, Puts seems to think the M-system is not where it is at.

"While the M9 may appeal to persons who like to
combine digital efficiency with traditional style of photography, the future points an a
different direction."

I think he meant "points in a different direction".

As far as "mediocre images" from a 6MPixel camera with an older sensor, I suspect you can say the same thing about any 5 year old digital camera compared with the "newest, latest, greatest". Nothing gets "mediocre" more quickly than digital.

No need to name anything. Suffice it to view R-D1 pics in this forum. I don't care about the M8 or the Contarex or whatever. This guy said that the R-D1's IQ is rather mediocre. Means that he's never used one or he doesn't know how to use it obviously. Did i say 'rather' mediocre reviewer? This was very kind of me i feel.

Here is my last rather mediocre picture with the R-D1.
Feel free to think that i'm a rather mediocre photographer (rather true i'm afraid) but rather mediocre IQ my ***

And? What does you picture show?

This one was taken with a C-Lux 2:

Same IQ as the R-D1, isn't it? 😉

Now, the R-D1 has the same (or very similar) sensor as our Pentax *istDL2 and although the Pentax's colours are gorgeous (one of the reasons why we still keep it), its IQ is clearly inferior to the M8's IQ.

Cheers,
Uwe

I think mediocre is a word that doesn't describe R-D1 properly.

It's a brilliant camera, full of unique controls, and a pioneer with an outstanding IQ.

Its amount of pixels is enough even for pro work.

A 10% better photographer gets better images from the R-D1 than another one gets from the M8 or M9...

Mediocre was Puts' use of that word. I guess he allowed personal feelings (beyond real camera possibilities) come into his article...

Cheers,

Juan
